Decency matters
I just looked this up and found that at Chili’s ,the server shares 3-5% of the sales to the support staff. That means they receive 20% tips, pays out 5%, and keep 15%, while most of the work is done by the support staff. This isn’t logical. What did I miss?

Point taken. It wasn’t a fancy place. I just took my family to the local Chili’s. :) I paid the tips, but I don’t make enough to not notice the tips amount on the bill, thus I don’t eat out often.

The foods were actually brought out by a different person from the kitchen I guess). So the $35 tip was for the less than 10-minute interaction . We paid the tips, but honestly, it didn’t feel worth it at all).

I assume the server gets the tips right? The last time I ate out, I had a 160-ish bill. The 20% suggested tips was additional. I’m probably a jerk, but the server was at our table 4 times (drinks, order, “how’s the food”, and bill) for less than 10 min

And one more for good measure: NGC 891, the Silver Sliver, about 30 million light years away in the direction of Andromeda. NGC 891 is a spiral galaxy like M74, but we are viewing it from the side instead of face on.

Columbia canceled my class on Race and Media, but I'm teaching it anyway.

All thanks to people power and community support-- especially from you all on Bluesky!

Happy to announce I'll be teaching Race Media and International Affairs 101 online-- hosted by D.C.'s MLK Jr. Memorial Library!
