School safety advocate, emergency management specialist (retired), gun violence prevention advocate, Columbine parent, Navy vet, husband, father, grandfather. No DMs.
I've been very interested in making something happen ever since the Columbine massacre. Originally started out advocating for parental involvement, appropriate age student involvement, and, finally, trained part time school staff as emergency managers advocacy. Small reach obstacle thus far.

To each his/her own, I guess. As the parent of a Columbine victim/survivor, I chose to be very protective of my family until things quieted a bit. Media frenzy was overwhelming. Some families chose the opposite route and spoke out, sometimes to their own detriment in the community.

I apologize, too, because the sequence of comments did, in fact, make it look like it was directed at you. I should have tagged the individual it was directed at. Sorry.

Voices in the immediate aftermath are often times very confused and disjointed. Media hounding victims, survivors, and families of both in those circumstances are, IMO, seeking a scoop and/or lack integrity. Helping understand should be done in hotwashes and final reports, again IMO.

My question wasn't directed at you. Media should have known better than to interview an already traumatized student, parental consent notwithstanding. Fine line between getting a scoop and professional integrity.

With respect, have you, or a loved one, gone through a similar experience?

With respect, the parents did not "lose" their children. Their children were murdered, taken from them. We need to see a paradigm shift in how we address these massacres. Otherwise, the efforts we make are no better than the "thoughts and prayers" that are so oftentimes offered following them.

As the parent of a Columbine survivor who recently passed away as a result of health issues related to her injuries, I can state that the chaos pursuant to massacres like this puts people in a very confused state. The same thing happened following Columbine. Please don't be too quick to judge.
