Eh, I don't really agree with that. LLMs do effectively 'make stuff up' just due to how they work inherently, it may not be 'intentional' but it is still citing nonexistent information in an authoritative manner.

Its been a while but iirc it was a combination of pipewire issues (no official support at the time) and newer games not playing well with drivers, pretty sure NVIDIA had something to do with it. Also modding support was a bit iffy for some games.

From past experience Mint is very stable but also often too outdated for certain tasks (gaming especially), but I hope you have a better time with it than I did.

Thats pretty much it then, since NixOS manages all the dependencies for each package for you its moved all the maintenance work related to that to the package maintainers.

Ive found declarative distros like NixOS to be the most stable and compatible at the sacrifice of a massive cost of entry. Nowadays I don't spend almost any time doing maintenance and if something breaks its you can roll back and wait for it to be fixed before updating.

Guess I made the right choice by resigning my account the other day.

That doesnt seem quite right though, since the entire candle is intended to be used up its more like candles are the oil of the oil lamp.

Oh I already posted about the network card lmao
June 27, 2025 at 2:13 AM
Ripping out the network card let me see the display and change the BIOS setting to never do that again. Weirdest bug ive ever encountered. All in all a quite fun but also frustraing experience ive come away learning a lot from.

Very strange I thought since it seemed to be running and I got no error codes from the motherboard. Well apparently the motherboard thought that the network card that was in there is capable of display out somehow and had set itself to PCI rendering mode.

Meanwhile I had set up Kodi in just about an hour with zero fuss about it, easiest setup of my life, at least in comparison. Also near the beginning when I was putting together the hardware the comluter didnt seem to want to render to the screen for whatever reason.

extra software in between as possible. Eventually I found this tiny wm solution called matchbox which is really hard to find info about online for some reason but seems to be specialized for embedded hardware which is exactly what I wanted. Finally, it was all working.
June 27, 2025 at 2:06 AM
undocumented as well? Anyways, onto the next issue (cause of course theres more). Turns out the big picture mode window starts at some awkward tiny resolution with no way of setting it at launch, so I had to spend a ton more time trying to figure out how to resize it ideally with as little...
June 27, 2025 at 2:04 AM
After a lot, and I mean roughly 2 days straight of documentation and github issues sleuthing I find one of the developers offhand mention some random undlcumented command line option that fixes hardware rendering. WHY?? oh also did I mention that most lf the command line options are comlletely...
June 27, 2025 at 2:01 AM
Well whatever I thought, its just UI shouldnt be hard to render right? WRONG. At some point they decided that Big Picture Mode, which I wanted to use for the controller support, is an electron app, and if you have ever tried to render webviews in 4k on your cpu thats for sure not a good time.
June 27, 2025 at 1:59 AM
Luckily I can run steam in X11 but oh no, disaster struck again. Apparently hardware acceleration for web views doesnt work on nvidia (another long standing bug) and since steam is mostly web views that means the entire application just doesnt render.
June 27, 2025 at 1:57 AM
To begin with, I was going to use gamescope since that seems to be the official way that the Steam Deck launches steam BUT, gamescope has only been tuned for AMD GPUs meaning they just do not give a shit about making it work on nvidia so I gave up on that.

getting it running is enough for one night. [3]

use as a media box. Ive wanted one for a while but due to some poor financial decisions partially out of my control and a severely underpaid job im currently not able to buy much for myself. Anyways, I wanted to setup the actual media box part of it so its not just a blank system but I think ... [2]
