Running out of time. It's fucked up, it's odd, but it's beautiful.

To finish the story, years later Naomi actually made a response. She made a music video for the song herself.

With it, however, we know that's not the case. It's an observer from afar. For all the creepy aspects of it, for the awful bits of it, there's hints of Naomi going through a rough part of her life. There's an earnest wish for her to keep going, to overcome.

Yet in art we can see the whole of a character's intentions. A tabboo subject might be expressed in a way that captures an earnest feeling.

In Naomi's case, without knowing the story behind it, there's a possibility in place for there to be a relationship between the speaker and Naomi.

In reality, this sort of behavior is gross, and I FEEL that grossness with knowing the story behind it. We can't know what a person's intentions are, and so often this sort of unknown attention comes with a parasocial possessiveness. A danger for the person seen.

It's repetitive, it's droning, it's this cacophony that feels like a prototype for songs like King of Carrot Flowers. It's rough and a lot more direct if you hear the lyrics. Everything, everything about it should repulse me, right?

Yet I love this song so dearly.

One of his band members handed her a copy of the album before going onstage for a show, telling her to listen to it and that this song was about her. It, uh... understandably flummuxed her.

Lemme pause that for now. Here. Give it a listen.

That... weirdly adds to Naomi as a piece.

It was a song from their first album, and it was written about a female bassist by the same name for a band that played the same festival as NMH a few times.

Thing is, he hadn't spoken to Naomi when he wrote it.

First off, I have a feeling most that'd be curious enough to read my thoughts would already know about this band and the oddness of its lead so I won't go over it. That said, it's always made me a little uncomfortable with their work. More than a little, it's a half-step away from being gross.

7) Naomi - Neutral Milk Hotel

This'll be the last one for now, and how appropriate. This one's been stuck in my head for days and days. It's not a particularly great song compared to their other works, but it really illustrates a lot of things I find interesting in art.

Even with his shittiness, he admits it's down to him in the end. His fuckups, his insecurities, he pushed his partner away and is reaping the pain from it.

Musically it matches so well, feeling far more like a punk bop with its fast bpm. I love it.

THIS one I adore. It paints a picture of the spectacular implosion of a relationship. The kind of bitterness that only comes with truly knowing someone. Even the title, hilariously overlong yet possessive, the singer plays the role of a truly shitty yet unquestionably hurt man.

6) It Takes Two to Tango, So What's That Guy Doing Here? - Billy Cobb

A guilty pleasure of mine is - weirdly - Midwest Emo as a genre. Never lived in the Midwest, never really liked emo as a genre, but for whatever reason I ended up really loving some of it.

It's earnest frustration and confusion. Their partnership, like a damaged submarine, is quickly falling apart. Yet he's too slow to fix the catastrophic issues in their relationship because he's been far too on guard.

Lyrically it's this sad little scene. A fight between the singer and their partner. We're only given the Diver's perspective, so we don't know whether he's honest about what caused the fight, but that doesn't really matter, does it? We're in HIS perspective, he believes this wholeheartedly.

This one's so bouncy, but with a hurt edge to it. Both the monotonous singing and the sliiightly off-kilter background instrumentation betrays the rhythm, bringing to my mind a sense of exasperation and even frustration. Like the 50lb lead boots mentioned in it, it's weighed down by that pain.

5) Deep Sea Diving Suit - The Magnetic Fields

Over the past year or two I've really fallen in love with The Magnetic Fields. They're very, very good at making simple, catchy songs that can suddenly grip your heart and tear it free.

That's at least what it means to me. The music, the easiness of it. As if it's putting a comforting arm across your back and pulling you close...

The last time I heard it live I ugly cried, though I wasn't having the best day. It helped.

Your depression, the mourning of what could have been, feels pointless. Like you're whining, like there's nothing to do but go on.

But trying to tread water in that belief will break you. Somehow, someway. Keep the pain in perspective, but accept it as pain.

4) Relatively Easy - Jason Isbell

Putting on an analytical tone doesn't feel right for this one. The base concept of this one hits too close to home. The feeling of having a shit hand dealt to you in life yet you know for a fact it could have been so, so much worse...
November 19, 2025 at 8:12 PM
It's about a relationship hidden by the closet. It's this bitter, sad expression of hurt. Of being used, of loving the user. There's pain in their voice, but it's the kind that's used to it.

Together with the music the tone swaddles you in sound, becoming comforting.

3) I'm Still Your Fag - Broken Social Scene

A rough one, a beautiful one. It's this beautiful, breezy, confident piece with rolling drums, a guitar that plucks out a driving melody. It's relaxing, with lyrics that rides the music through the melancholy subject matter.

2) Jumping Someone Else's Train - The Cure

Every instrument in the song sells the idea of movement and high speeds. The lyrics speed up and down around the rhythm as if it were jumping from idea to idea, just like the concept of hopping from trend to trend.

Listening to the lyrics, however...

There's a sense of melancholy and joy. As if the singer is resigned to the relationship they're in, the Home he'd wanted. He loves this person he's singing about, but along with the passion there's a shrugging reluctance. Still. They are his Home, in the end.

1) This Must Be the Place - The Talking Heads

Well that's fun, it's my favorite song from when I was a kid. It's still in the running now, but my feelings towards it have gotten more complicated over the years.

It's this steady little tune you might lose yourself in. Rhythmic drums, synth, bass
