2/2 I believe it’s part of our moral compass and linked to our ego to some extent; they help our survival as individuals and as a species from an evolutionary point of view. Why would anyone knowledgeable and aware of a situation cheer for their enemy or the enemy of their own people?

1/2 I hear you! According to psychology, schadenfreude based on justice is connected to fairness and values. So, one can still be empathetic towards most beings, while simultaneously getting a kick out of witnessing misfortune befalling those who threaten life and safety of one’s fellows.

And yet, many USians have told me I exaggerate when I use the words dictator and dictatorship. What do they believe we call a form of government in which one person or a small group possesses absolute power without effective constitutional limitations? 😬

I’m not really surprised that an imperialist and increasingly fascist dictatorship — lead by a privileged person who’s officially qualifying anyone prioritizing human lives, dignity and safety over profits as being “radical” — is recycling the idea of social Darwinism as an agent of progress again.

4/4 The sad part about it is that they have the ressources and the power to make things better, for themselves and for the rest of the world, but they won’t because they believe that “being the best” gives them a pass on improving.

3/4 (again!) Now, the problem with the US is the exceptionalism, as if they are better than everyone, when they’re really not.

My partner is Burkinabè and has to explain to people back home they are more likely to build generational wealth staying home and using the plane ticket money to start a business there than coming to develop countries that aren’t as perfect as they seem to be from afar.
