I hesitate. Why do I smell coffee? Of course, I decide it's nothing and open up the red door. Inside— ohh, inside! —makes my heart bound outta my chest! That beloved pink, orange, and white paper bag and a regular iced coffee from Dunks is sitting and waiting for me. My lips curl to a genuine, appreciative smile! Haha, fuck yes! I love that wonderful girl so fucking much! It makes the beginning of my bad day so much better! Though, as I wonder how Jess could have known I didn't just stay home sick, I discover the book I needed isn't actually inside my locker. And shit, I know exactly where it is, too! Well, and so… my crappy day continues, but at least I have an iced coffee and a pastry! With a sigh, I remove the treats from the locker and go on with my day, strolling ridiculously late to my first class— enough time to get the homework. Ugh! The rest of my day has exactly the same vibe. Man, I swear I'm not usually this forgetful or stupid! To sum it up, the unfortunate Top 3: 3) I get a D on my English paper, which I worked really fucking hard on! 2) New seating arrangements in French 3 has me now sitting next to Paulie's crazy ex— by which I mean she actually stalked him and caused some major-ass drama —and this arrangement is all for group projects which means I have to work with her, too. Yay! 1) And to top it off, I'm now wearing sweaty-ass gym shorts I shoulda taken home a week ago because I sat in chocolate pudding during lunch. Some kids still call me Tinkles from an incident that happened years ago, I didn't need to add Poopsy or Shitter to my roster of crude nicknames.

Small spaces were his usual go-to, not exposed areas. Maybe that bathroom had people in it, so maybe he did flee outside… as strange as it sounded.

Paulie could audibly hear the eye roll on the other end. "Awesome, thanks." He hung up to keep the conversation from lingering too much. And if he stayed there any longer, he was surely afraid the cops would be called on him. Obviously, he didn't want that. Paulie looked through the review mirror back at the man he thought he knew one last time. He was still taken aback by the drastic change in appearance. Maybe he should text Ms. Sullivan anyway. Undecided, he sent an update to Vicky instead. "G drunk n past out. Omw 2 his apt." He gave her his address. She could make the decision whether or not to let Gordon's mother know. It was a family matter after all. He popped the address into his GPS and set off to find the apartment, hoping that G didn't wake up and throw up in his car. over. the text paulie sends says "Gordon drunk and passed out. Oh my way to his apartment."

With a huge breath of air, Jess exclaimed, “Daaaaaamn!” “Right?” replied Ryan, gazing down at the tiny screen to make sure the music had paused. Sixth grade hadn’t been too long years-wise ago, but still, high school hadn’t been quite the fun adventure like elementary school had: Kids broke off into cliques; the bullies got meaner; the populars didn’t come hang so frequently anymore. Times definitely had changed. “Man, does time travel exist yet? Let’s go back!” Jesse expressed in desire and laughed, accidentally falling into Ryan from unending reminiscent joy. Ryan burst out into laughter, too, gripping onto Jess to prevent a fall to the hard patio pavement. “Would rather stay here, thanks,” said Ryan, “Just hanging by a moment…”

After shoving his notebook and textbook into his bag, Paulie was replying in good-spirits to a failed-attempt of a jeer one of his classmates made when Mrs. Shannon-Naim called out to him. He said his goodbye and walked over to her. Through the door out in the corridor, Paulie could see Vicks fidgeting and talking to someone. He flicked his eyes over to his teacher. “I absolutely swear I had, I had no idea she was gonna do that,” he began, “I was, uhm, I was just asking if she’d, she’d think Gordon would, would, uh, would tutor me. Noth-nothing else!” Paulie shoved a hand in his hoodie pocket and picked at the lint hidden inside. In a small voice, he added, “Also, sorry for, sorry for calling you ‘mom’.” He gave a weak smile.

There was that.” The teammates at the other end of the table quieted and peered at him; even Ryan whipped his head back. Abdul’s curiosity got the better of him and asked, “Left side?” Everyone knew Gordon wore an ankle brace during practice, but no one had known why specifically—except for Paulie now. Gordon never seemed to show any signs of pain; he just wore it—no explanation.  Paulie nodded, “Yep, yep!”

He broke out of his frozen state, deciding if he couldn’t find it, neither could the boy, and strode over to Mr. Curiosity-Killed-the-Cat, leaving a bloody footprint—not real—in the carpet; he ripped the belt from Kitty Boy’s hands, fingers briefly touching. “Out.” Gordon grumbled. “Huh? If, if, if you don’t wanna answer, that’s fine!” He winced and shifted to his knees. Picking up a trophy, he shoved it on the shelf. “Was only just curious, y’know! Also, did you know your hands are ice cold?” He covered his mouth, mumbling through his own hand, “Oh! Sorry, that’s a question, too!” He dropped his arm and picked up another trophy. “Lemme help! It was my bad after all!” Had he not heard him? “Get—out!” Gordon reiterated forcefully through his teeth while his fingers wrapped around and clenched the old white belt. His patience had sunk. [Paulie] lowered the object and observed Gordon’s tired face. “You really won’t lemme help, huh?”

Maya’s lips twitched as Mrs. Abel caught them chatting. “Is whatever you two are whispering about worth sharing with the class, Miss Kennedy and Miss Oberman?” The two of them, …and Paulie…, glanced up at her. “Sorry, Mrs. Abel. Won’t happen again.” Maya smiled sweetly. Suck up! Their teacher gave them a scrutinizing glare—well, mainly Maya—before muttering what sounded like a warning toward her, regarding something about the new school play. Maya frowned, crossing her arms, and glared at Paulie. The amused smile he wore vanished. What! What did he do? Paulie hid his face again as Mrs. Abel walked over to her desk for a moment. To be honest, he should have worked on his paper which was due soon or even his algebra homework. But why? Although, boredom had him yawning and fidgeting in his seat. He doodled plenty of tiny cat faces, butt holes, and paw prints hidden in his algebra textbook — the only parts of a cat he could draw — and scratched out any remnant of his prior relationship he randomly found, which wasn't much. The bell rang, at last, and Paulie practically bolted out the door. Despite not being fond of history class in general, for it was a soul-sucking endless void of facts about dead guys — oh, and Maya was there (thankfully, not next to him) — Gordon only sat a few seats away closer to the front of the room in the inner part of the U-shape their teacher aligned the desks in. Paulie sat in the outer part, so he could sit back and observe without even trying, really.
