One of the loveliest city parks in Europe. The flowerbeds were meticulously maintained when I was there in June-July ‘23, despite near constant air raids.

One of striking parallels from my visits to NS documentation centers in Germany is the sheer transparent transparency idiocy of NZ policies.

How that weakness contributed to their decision to roll the dice in 38-39.

Reminds me of the Thomas Mann quote calling Munich, “the stupidest of cities.”

Trump isn’t even in office yet and this meme is about to become reality.

Except it’s the Kurds in NES, and Trump won PA +2.

Passed a PSRM political rally in Chișinău yesterday.

A mostly elderly crowd listened as a Russian speaker read aloud the diaspora vote totals from each EU country, feeding into pro-Russian narratives of a stolen election in Moldova.

What will PSRM’s voter base look like in a decade?

Can’t remember, did McChrystal’s SOF staff do anything else that was “politically stupid” around 2010?

Postwar was not glamorous.

The key difference between west and east Germany is that the rubble was cleaned up in West Germany.

The pile of rubble that was the Frauenkirche in Dresden only started to be touched in 1994.

A great read on the history of the Battle of Aachen by @sodrock.bsky.social.

Charlemagne’s Europe was born in a small collection of cities along the Meuse River basin, but, apart from the Dom and Rathaus, the ancient city of Aachen feels like a post war shopping district rebuilt on Roman roads.

A legend on the map featuring all the polities of Europe, circa 1816.

The one other Republic listed on the map apart from the Swiss Republic? San Marino.

@kraut.bsky.social, can you decipher the monarchy listed on the fold in the map?

Fascinating to see the eastern frontiers of the Austrian Empire, largely unchanged after the Napoleonic Wars. All fortress towns and new cities in lands retaken from the Ottomans: ‘Peterwardein,’ ‘Karlsburg,’ and ‘New Arad.’ (Modern day Novi Sad, Serbia, and Alba Iulia and Arad, Romania.

Remarkable map of ‘The Network of Postal Routes in Middle Europe’ on display at the Chernivtsi Oblast Local Lore Museum. A great visit, with the local klezmer band paying just outside giving a welcome soundtrack to my visit.
