Recent reported layoffs in the private sector haven't shown up in the initial state claims data yet, but federal unemployment insurance claims spiked significantly over the last two weeks.

The number of series seems to have some impact on timing, but it still takes longer than it should. Unfortunately, it's only really a problem once a month, which makes testing difficult...

At EPI we have an R script that uses the BLS API to pull in a few hundred series. Normally this runs in less than a minute, but on jobs day right as the numbers come out, it can take north of 30 mins. I am not sure why this happens.
