Not starting with Mother 1 is very reasonable, but I do recommend playing it at some point if only for the novelty of playing an RPG that's just... so old. It's very rough, but I didn't regret playing it, and I felt rewarded once I got to Mother 3. No judgement to anyone who skips of course.
