Stumbled upon this old Wordpress from the director of the Lord of the Rings behind the scenes documentaries and it's very endearing. Like this comment that expresses confidence in the upcoming behind the scenes docs for The Hobbit.
Two comments from March 27, 2011: "I very much enjoyed your approach to documenting the making of LOTR and for my part bought the DVDs again only for your documentaries, and I gained an extra copy of the films as a slight bonus. I have shown them to several people and everyone has liked what you have achieved. I wish you the very best in your career although I am a little disappointed you are not doing the same for the Hobbit." Costa Botes replies: "Thank you Daniel, I appreciate the feedback. Please check out some of the other pages on this site, and you’ll see why I’m not too broken hearted about missing The Hobbit. It’s interesting that our local media are accentuating negatives and problems with this production – rather the opposite to coverage given the production of LOTR; even though, of course, those films were plagued with problems large and small too. I’m sure that whatever travails the Hobbit goes through, the end result will stand confidently alongside the Rings Trilogy. And lets not forget that setbacks and obstacles make for more interesting behind the scenes documentaries!"

The thing I really don’t understand is why people use A.I. to avoid doing research for their hobbies. Isn’t that supposed to be the fun part?
ROOSE: A.I. has essentially replaced Google for me for basic questions: What setting do I put this toaster oven on to make a turkey melt? How do I stop weeds from growing on my patio? I use it for interior decorating - I'll upload a photo of a room in my house and say, "Give this room a glow-up, tell me what furniture to buy and how to arrange it and generate the 'after' picture." A friend of mine just told me that they now talk to ChatGPT voice mode on their commute in their car - instead of listening to a podcast, they'll just open it up and say, "Teach me something about modern art," or whatever.

It cannot be that young libertarians end up betrayed by the moral emptiness of their selfish politics. No, they drink because everyone else is too stupid.
As a young lawyer and trader in Manhattan in the 1990s, I began to understand why so many become disillusioned after college. The world appears too big a place. Rather than fight the relentless indifference of the universe, many of my saner peers retreated to tending their small gar-dens. The higher one's IQ, the more pessimistic one became about free-market politics — capitalism simply is not that popular with the crowd. Among the smartest conservatives, this pessimism often manifested in heroic drinking; the smartest lib-ertarians, by contrast, had fewer hang-ups about positive law and escaped not only to alcohol but beyond it.

When Brian Wilson first heard the Beatles’ 1965 album Rubber Soul, he was so astonished by the album that the next morning, he went straight to his piano and started writing “God Only Knows” with his songwriting partner Tony Asher. Wilson knew that Rubber Soul — an album that contained the most mature songwriting from John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison yet, and exhibited the beginnings of a studio effects revolution — was a glimpse into the future of rock music, and that the Beatles were at the forefront. As cofounder of the Beach Boys, he knew that music was changing and for his group to stay on top in the industry, he would have to make something just as good, or better. The result was Pet Sounds, released May 16, 1966. It was the Beach Boys’ greatest artistic achievement; one that would never be reached by the group again.

In this story about the Paramount merger, the FCC chair calls DEI programs “invidious,” perhaps intending to say “insidious” but inadvertently using the more accurate word.
“We can only under the statute move forward and approve a transaction if we find that doing so serves the public interest,” Carr said. “If there’s businesses out there that are still promoting invidious forms of DEI discrimination, I really don’t see a path forward where the FCC could reach the conclusion that approving the transaction is going to be in the public interest.”

He has argued for tariffs for decades, convinced of their power to end what he contends is an era in which the United States has been bled by its allies and adversaries alike. While many of his top economic aides, led by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, were never known for advocating broad tariffs in the past, they all know that obeisance to Mr. Trump’s view of geoeconomics is the price of holding a place of power and influence in the administration’s economic club.
