I report on the Bay Area, mostly Richmond and Vallejo these days for Richmondside and The Vallejo Sun. I post about Oakland too and might editorialize a bit about the town. I live there. Feel free to reach out: Zack.Haber@gmail.com
Tomorrow Vallejo's school board is likely to decide on closing more schools. If a lot of people show up to the meeting and speak out, will Jill Tucker do any follow up reporting? I think I can safely say that no, she won't. She's not interested in the truth.

I don't write all this because I think the press's job is to uplift activists. I write all this because the people of Vallejo, and those who want to learn about Vallejo, need reporting that accurately portrays what's going on, not whatever lazy slop Tucker is doing...

But to do a good job with that article, Tucker would have had to approach it with curiosity, instead of exaggerating to make unions and activists look bad...

The point of her article was just to contrast what's happening in Vallejo with what's happening in Oakland and SF.

My read is pushback against closures *is* actually less strong in Vallejo than in those places (which set a high bar), and there maybe could be an interesting article exploring why...

She sure as hell didn't go to Vallejo ever and visit the schools currently on the chopping block, or she would have seen this:

She didn't bother reading Vallejo Sun reporting where I repeatedly outlined all the public speakers opposing closures

She didn't read reporting by Thomas Gase where he dove into community organizing against specific school closures, like this... www.timesheraldonline.com/2025/11/14/c...
Cooper Elementary doesn’t want ‘family’ broken up
Amy Gallegos has loved having her children spend time at Johnston Cooper Elementary School. She’s hoping that generations of future families can experience that same feeling. Gallegos — a PTA…

To make her sweeping claim that there's not community pushback about school closures, Tucker literally watched, at maximum, one public meeting and talked to the district administration.
December 16, 2025 at 9:37 PM
At regular board meetings, committee meetings, and town halls, scores of people were regularly speaking out against the closures.

Tucker clearly just watched the one final meeting, when the writing was already on the wall about the closures...

She minimizes these voices by stating only 6 public commenters spoke out against closures before the board voted to close 3 schools last school year.

Technically true but Tucker doesn't realize or doesn't care that there were lots of meetings and town halls about the closures...

In the article she says that the community in Vallejo has offered no pushback to school closures, and contrasts this the communities in Oakland and San Francisco.

She neither interview nor quotes any of them people who have regularly spoken out against closures at meetings...

The possibilities here are virtually endless. A few of them: fire departments, libraries, arts and music programming, recreational programming for all but especially youth, food aid, parks, disaster preparedness services, planting and caring for flora in public space. i could go on

It's important for people to know this. On the other hand, I could be wrong but I think he's mostly being hyperbolic. His point is cities spend tons of money on police. They don't have to. In Oakland it's around 40% last I checked.
