There is a bunch of other changes that are just as disruptive and stupid. They want to charge a fee for a continuance in immigration court of $100+! They want to charge $900 just to be able to file an appeal of a decision of an officer! $5,000 for being apprehended between ports of entry! 8/

They also want to impose a yearly asylum fee while the asylum claim is pending (which can be years). This would be set at a minimum of $100, with the exact amount to be determined by the Secretary of DHS or the Attorney General, with annual adjustment to the fee based on the CPI. 7/

Again, asylees are fleeing from persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution and are therefore unable or unwilling to return to his or her country of nationality. Adding a $1000 barrier to asylum is cruel and will incentivize crossing into the US illegally. But that isn't even all! 6/

This reconciliation bill would introduce a mandatory fee for asylum applications. For FY2025, the fee is set at a minimum of $1,000, with the exact amount to be determined by the Secretary of DHS or the Attorney General, with annual adjustment to the fee based on the CPI. This is fucked, people. 5/

a $500 Fraud Prevention and Detection fee. These are employment based, so the company would generally cover those fee costs, but it gives you an idea of the fees that are already being charged. 4/

This Asylum fee is supposed to help out with the asylum process, as asylees generally don't have much money and the process has assumed that, so this fee is supposed to be part of the funding for the program. When entering the US for the first time, you might also have to pay 3/

For context, many employment-based statuses have you fill out form I-129. The filing fee for this varies, but for basic employment examples, an H-1B filing fee is $780 and for an L it is $1,385. Now, this isn't the only fee. Most companies have to then pay a $600 asylum fee. 2/

I've now heard from @tomcartwright.bsky.social that the people with 1 PM appointments are all being turned away across the border and will thus not get their chance to seek protection.
As of now, unclear whether any migrant can access ports of entry. If no, that's illegal. bsky.app/profile/pala...
Today I’ll be on the Paso del Norte bridge talking with migrants waiting for their CBP One appointments. Trump threatened during the campaign and following his victory to close the app, which has become the only means to request asylum.

I also understand that immigration has changed since they have entered the country, and we should absolutely help create a path to citizenship for cases like this, or at least a path to being able to get work authorization and other legal documents.

These people were misled by Trump/deluded themselves into thinking they were not targets but at the same time, they are the ones who "didn't do it right." These new asylum seekers have EAD's and stuff because they went through the legal asylum process!!
