Reddit has finally banned FOSSCAD, the largest and longest-running subreddit dedicated to 3D-printed firearms.

The community was removed for violating Rule 7: "Keep it legal, and avoid posting illegal content or soliciting or facilitating illegal or prohibited transactions."

The killing of Charlie Kirk echoes the assassination of Jean-Paul Marat. Both were polarizing figures, admired by supporters and reviled by opponents. History shows assassinations rarely silence. They create martyrs, amplify conflict, and shape politics long after the act itself.

New article with Joery Matthys in Het Tijdschrift Politie. Using Operation Desarme 3D as a case study, we explore how right wing extremists across Western countries are experimenting with 3D printed firearms and what this means for law enforcement internationally.

At Edinburgh airport. Canadians have long used flags on backpacks to avoid being misidentified as our southern neighbours, but I’ve never seen the phenomenon so widespread. Rough estimate: nearly a third of travellers on my flight showed some outward expression of their nationality.

Back in St Andrews for the day—a town that shaped both my personal and professional life. I got married here, made lifelong friends, and found my intellectual footing as I transitioned from intel analyst to academic.

Grateful to @gnetresearch.bsky.social for the invite to speak at their 5th Annual Conference. I rattled the cage a bit—arguing that the real threat any one tech, but failures of imagination. The real danger lies in the convergence of emerging tools. We need systems-thinking and bold analysis.

Trying to ID this drone: hexacopter frame with only 5 props mounted—possibly damaged or field-modified. Looks a bit like a DJI FlyCart 30, but could be custom-built from off-the-shelf parts. Any insights?

Yesturday I had the pleasure of giving a guest lecture on at the University of Bath’s Department of Politics, Languages & International Studies. Thanks to @maurolubrano.bsky.social and the sharp grad students for a rich conversation on imagination, national security, and emerging tech.

Óglaigh na hÉireann (OnH) members were seen brandishing an FGC-9 (a 3D-printed firearm) at a Belfast funeral—marking the 4th time the group has displayed 3DPF in propaganda.

Despite this, there’s no evidence OnH is using 3DPF in violence. Is this symbolism over practicality?

In Russia’s Transbaikal region, an FPV drone armed with explosives was used in a mafia-style hit—the first recorded case. Authorities suspect ex-military drone operators from the Ukraine war. The spread of battlefield drone tactics into organized crime poses major risks for law enforcement.

Speculation is swirling online that the flag on the truck involved in the New Orleans ramming attack is an ISIS flag. While it's unclear what the flag depicts, the addition of a flagpole/flag to the vehicle at all strongly points to an ideological motive, regardless of the flag's identity.

BBQ for New Year's Eve at 6°C feels strange. Since my return to Canada I've been looking forward to firing up the grill in the middle of winter, snow and all. This year, no snow—still grilling, but it hits different.

Luigi Mangione's manifesto makes a direct reference to Computer-Aided Design (CAD). This suggests that even if the 3D-printed firearm found on Mangione at the time of his arrest was not the weapon used in the assassination, it is likely that a 3D-printed firearm was involved in the killing.

Since COVID, there have been several "tongue-in-cheek" comments from Republican lawmakers, talking heads, and influencers about annexing or "liberating" Canada. As a matter of national security, Canada must denounce and resist the normalization of such discourse.

The criminal complaint against Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, indicates that the suppressor found in his possession was also 3D-printed.

The 3DPF community often celebrates when their designs are confiscated and displayed in police evidence photos. Following reports that a firearm linked to the UnitedHealthcare CEO’s murder involved a frame by Chairmanwon, members of the community have praised the designer across various platforms.

Initial reports indicate that the firearm used in the brazen murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was assembled from a 3D-printed parts kit completion, specifically the Chairmanwon V1 model. This model is a 3D-printed frame designed to accommodate Glock components.

Today, we remember the 14 women lost in the École Polytechnique massacre, targeted for pursuing engineering. Their legacy lives on in the brave women breaking barriers in STEM and beyond. Let’s honor their memory and stand with those shaping a more equitable future.

Óglaigh na hÉireann (ÓNH), a dissident republican group, has released new images showing masked members armed with 3D-printed firearms. The photos, reportedly taken in Craigavon, come as the group threatens the Northern Irish gang 'The Firm' over alleged drug-dealing activities in Armagh.

I am excited to present at the International Firearms Forensic and Intelligence Summit in Montreal tomorrow! I’ll lead the final plenary session, focusing on the use of privately made firearms—especially 3DPF—by insurgents and terrorist actors, and why REMVE actors are among the early adopters

This week, I had the pleasure of briefing Canadian government analysts on "How Terror Evolves", equipping them with tools to understand terrorist innovation and emerging tech. As a former CAPIA member, it was a privilege to share insights with past colleagues. Thanks, CAPIA, for the invitation!

This week, I had the privilege of addressing the UN Security Council CTED on the proliferation of 3DPF. I focused on legislative and regulatory challenges, introducing a framework for targeted interventions across the fabrication process. Stay tuned for a potential article expanding these ideas!
