If I had to describe it, it'd be 13 Sentinels-esque sensibilities with his emphasis on texture and seamlessness - unifying it all as if it were BG art, rather than in cel-like fashion. Alongside the roto/reference-based acting that highlights children's spontaneity, it's a cocktail evoking nostalgia

New Hiro series took me by surprise, but at the same time it's extremely Hiro. By which I mean it's about topics such as women, women's minutiae, dumbass dork women

Speculated about Momoka Hase being the art director because she worked in the novel. The secret artboards did look Liz-ish which fit the bill, but the painterly style is something I'd associate with Mao Takayama and she's also available for a debut

That or Yamasaki since she's the big weirdo--

Staff-wise: Hell yeah Ota. Again, no need to say that he's proven to be incredibly ambitious and innovative as an episode director. Okamura feinted everyone by becoming an enshutsu out of nowhere, and then one project later he's debuting as sole character designer. Bro could do anything in Denmoku

Shame people don't get to see the cool artboards they screened after the public stream, because they were very illustrative of Ota's talk about the setting. Rather than a steampunk filter over Kyoto, they wanted to imagine how Kyotoites would shape the world back if they lived in such time & place

The interconnection between themes & aesthetic, especially the art direction, is something he has emphasized in the live stage & interviews. Connecting the pollution with the abstract, unclean BGs is neat... and if CITY #05 wasn't enough of a hint, Ota loves coming up with new forms of expression
October 25, 2025 at 1:55 PM
But of course, it has changed a lot, and you only need to check the key visuals for that. The new premise and addition of steampunk elements have given it a much punchier feeling, with which Ota hopes to underline the themes already present in the source material

It's also not a change from that one sheet of production materials that made the rounds over being saved from the arson, because that was never from the animation project. That was from the internal contest in 2018 to decide on the designer. (Source: me, I've seen them all privately. It was Sawa's)

Stuff about Denmoku now that it's real & public: this is Not the project that was initially conceived, it has been rebooted. Some aspects make it quite obvious, like the fact that it's Minoru Ota's series direction debut, the shift in the setting, and the new subtitle. Fortunately, it looks great!

More Patreon notes! This time, I went through the Fall 2025 anime season to comment on the more interesting series & productions. The obvious standouts in a modest season are there of course, but I'd say the focus is on series that are likely to be overlooked www.patreon.com/posts/secret...

Wrote about The Summer Hikaru Died / HikaNatsu being planned as a sensorial experience, but in a way that reinforces its themes. Inescapable sound, morphing visuals, and inventive direction give slithery form to the horror of conformity & the allure of the other blog.sakugabooru.com/2025/10/19/h...

The only downside of the movie being an all-timer is that it's making people forget that the show is, quite often, unimaginably good as well

Revue Starlight group rewatch hit some damn good episodes today

Good news: the character who sucks is actually great

Hope it doesn't drive me away because mutobe's got the sauce. Also I hope they can somehow animate 2 cours of his absurd ideas?
October 9, 2025 at 3:02 AM
Extremely specific compositions and layouts that are nightmarish to draw, with pointed intent narratively, thematically, and even when it comes to the series' relationship with its real location. But also sometimes he just thinks the insane angle is cool. It's so fun when real nerds direct things
October 9, 2025 at 2:58 AM
Also, Chiramune! I bounced off the LNs multiple times, despite knowing they had Ideas, because the internal narration was rat poison to me. The anime keeps his character voice but trims enough of that to so far make it palatable, especially with the direction of an absolute sicko like mutobe

Heard SI-VIS was macrossian and that's a close enough approximation, especially in a world in need of replacements since Kawamori is busy being an AI peddler. Wish it had the means to sell performances that are meant to be amazing, but there's potential for fun chemistry with Maruto writing it all
