We concluded that the Department of Environment did not have the authority to withhold records about the Victoria Gold heap leach facility failure and recommended the records be released to the complainant. They are continuing to withhold 14 of the 33 pages.

Canada’s first ever key principles on public fairness have been created by ombudsman across the country. These seven principles further support the Yukon Ombudsman’s call for amendments to the Act - to ensure independence and the ability to conduct own motion investigations.

Our office will be closed on Monday, June 23 in honour of National Indigenous Peoples Day. This is a statutory holiday for the Yukon - a time during summer solstice to celebrate the 14 distinct First Nations in the territory. Our office hours will resume on Tuesday, June 24 at 8:30am.

Our staff will learn about "Cultivating Safe Spaces" in an online workshop that looks at conditions, protocols and perspectives. The Moose Hide Campaign encourages us "to take practical steps for our collective journey of reconciliation."

Two of these changes are in response to recommendations the Ombudsman made in his investigation on three independent complaints against the Human Rights Commission. The investigation found unfairness in organizational operations.
