The Yukon Ombudsman joined other ombuds offices across the country in a letter urging the federal government to take swift action.

Our work doesn’t end once we’ve made recommendations. We later determine whether the authority has implemented our recommendations and share our findings.

We are currently reviewing their Privacy Impact Assessment to ensure it aligns with the Yukon Health Information Privacy and Management Act and will pass along any recommendations to the Yukon government as required.

Currently the Yukon Ombudsman and Commissioner cannot investigate municipalities. Over the years, he has requested the same authority found in the majority of Canadian jurisdictions. One of these changes would include municipalities under his jurisdiction.

Accountability is not real if the people who are supposed to be held accountable get to decide how accountable they will be.
We concluded that the Department of Environment did not have the authority to withhold records about the Victoria Gold heap leach facility failure and recommended the records be released to the complainant. They are continuing to withhold 14 of the 33 pages.
