I want to be wrong but I don’t see another way. We’ve lost the last remaining remnants of rural Dems. Pete Stauber represents the North Shore! Duluth! Someone that far to the right won the environment gem of the north shore. I just don’t see any other way.
A table titled ‘Partisans’ Preferences for the Ideological Direction of Their Parties’ shows survey results from 2021 and 2025 on how Democrats and Republicans want their parties to evolve. Among Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents in 2025, 29% want the party to be more liberal (down from 34% in 2021), 22% want it to stay the same (down from 31%), and 45% prefer it to be more moderate (up from 34%). Among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents in 2025, 28% want the party to be more conservative (down from 40% in 2021), 43% want it to stay the same (up from 34%), and 27% prefer it to be more moderate (up from 24%). The data suggests an increasing preference for moderation in both parties over time.
