It is also safe to assume that much of the operations in Africa were coordinated in Khmeimim. Without this base, all operations in Africa were virtually impossible or the very least much harder to accomplish. And harder means, more expensive. (7/9)

However, logistically, Russia always relied on the Syrian bases to fly out the riches and fly in mercenaries. They always had to pass Khmeimim when going in either direction. (6/9)
