The thing is, they couldn't have. Not when the prices were 10 times higher. It's SpaceX that opened the gates, but with more competition I believe we'll see more uses and more access

Generally yes, because rather than only serving big broadcasters and spy agencies, there is now more access to uses like vegetatin tracking, climate measurement, water radars and other advanced agriculture, and also some basic science, astronomy, physics, etc.

Sattelite launches exploded in the last decade. And the dropping cost means that satellites from everywhere are launched, even if the launch place itself is the US.

The important thing is cost reduction. The 50s work showed what's possible but gave access to space only to the richest governments and corporations. The space competition brings in small companies, NGOs, researchers.
