And he can have his supporters wave sparklers instead of a dictator parade

How many regular folks have had either disciplinary actions taken by their employer for posting disparaging material. And this is what we find on a government site. We are living in an upside down world

Thank you, I needed this ✔️. I was headed down the doom and gloom rabbit hole

The metaphors were beautiful. Talking about the steps like crooked teeth and the branches of the trees reaching toward the sky while their “toes” gripped the ground. I do love the fact that the kids don’t really think it’s that bad-until they see how others live on the family drives.

I think there many social ills that some don’t want to think about: poverty and gender. The vignette about Papa working his hands to the bones with little reward goes against some views that people of color are lazy. I think the raw honesty is challenging stereotypes & some don’t like that.

A standard question on job applications -Have you ever been convicted of a felony? If a president can be a felon is this something that people should not be asked on job applications?

Connect that with the vignette Hips. Both have female protagonists; both are using body parts to signify hard work, never ending struggles, and stereotypes. Ugly shoes=ugly girl. Wide hips with baby=too many children=poverty/exhaustion.

Each vignette is so powerful and the writing is so descriptive. When she talks about her father readers can feel the exhaustion he is suffering from.

I had 3 brothers -my dad used their shortened names when we went to bed. I wanted that, too. Funny how same experiences can produce different results.

One of the first vignettes is My Name where she is the only person in her family whose name can’t be shortened. I felt this way when I was her age.

My favorite vignette is Rice Sandwich. I was in school in the 70s and was a student who had to eat lunch at school. I always wanted to go home for lunch. My husband had to go home for lunch and then wait on the corner (while watching his friends play) for the bell to ring. Grass is/isn’t greener…
