I don't think so. This is what they show me in the Netherlands. I've heard of Black History Month, though it is not celebrated here. I know Beyonce. I think the Knicks is a sports team but don't even know which sport. The rest is a mystery to me.

Thanks. She is often in my office with me too. She even has her own cubbyhole in my bookcase.

@deborahhamer.bsky.social Found a 1694 manual for elders and deacons that instructs the scriba (scribe/secretary) to record the names of all the newly baptized children and keep a baptismal register. Nothing about registration fees. See p. 286 of book: books.google.nl/books?id=uAJ...

It's #GenHour again. Earlier today I listened to an interesting talk about the Dutch Reformed Church in America. Told my 14-year-old son he would have loved it and he was like "WUT?"
Then told him about the cameo by @deborahhamer.bsky.social's cat and he completely agreed! We💖cats. This is June.

Evergates's books are among those I'm using to find original sources.

Working on verifying the last generation of my line back to Eleanor of Aquitaine. Found another piece of the puzzle, in the Vatican digital archives. But so far, not one contemporary document that names Eleanor as mother of Marie of France, countess of Champagne. Now looking for indirect evidence.

I answered such a query in 1993, which was the first time I got published. Twenty years later, I discovered I descended from the people in the query.
I blogged about it:

@allthosebefore.bsky.social @waybackgen.bsky.social This is an example of what I would consider endogamy. This is my tree, with only my father's side showing. All his ancestors lived in the same isolated area of the Netherlands, probably at least since early Middle Ages.

More nuanced version of my pedigree chart, by municipality. On my father's side, everyone was born within 25m/40km of Winterswijk, which includes some Germany. His mother has 100% Winterswijk ancestry in the first 10 generations. My mother's side is mostly from North Brabant, with one Zeeland line.

Today's task: reading up on Holland law in the 1630s, to understand a criminal case in New Netherland. Thankfully, the original works of Hugo de Groot, arguably one of the sharpest legal minds of 17th century Holland, is available at Google Books. Published in 1631, so spot-on for me.

I did a variation of the origins chart to see how far my ancestors moved during their lifetimes (in km). My father's side especially was very immobile. #GenHour

Post you from a different era.

This is me sitting between my grandparents, when I was 16 years old, on their 50th wedding anniversary. One of the few times in my life I ever wore a dress!
I gave them a book I had made about their ancestors as a gift. I had started doing #genealogy the year before.

For #OnePlaceWednesday, I would like to mention my #OnePlaceStudy of Winterswijk, the Netherlands. A place where nobody new ever settled, where serfdom continued until 1795, and whence 1/3 of the population emigrated to the US in 1845-1880. I chose this emigration as the subject for my dissertation.

My book purchase of the day: The new (18th) edition of the Chicago Manual of Style. These days, I am a writer as much as a genealogist, mostly for an American audience. As a non-native speaker of English, I find this a helpful guide, especially for more formal pieces of writing.

One of the more interesting new books I got this year was Tracing your Marginalised Ancestors by @janetfew.bsky.social.
Anyone else got book tips for the upcoming holiday season?

Another favourite way of mine to share results is on my blog. I've had my website since 1993, blog since 2005. My most popular series is the one where I verify my descent from Eleanor of Aquitaine, one generation at a time. #GenHour
