Correction: 1965 - the Sony CV-2000 - a videocorder - hit retailers in August 1965, and was the first standalone commercial home video recorder (i.e. without a monitor)

The first standalone VCR hit in 1976 with Sony's SL-7200.

Excited about “Golgo 13,” but I want to point out that consumer home video recording technology began in the 1960s, not the 1970s. The Sony CV-2000 is from 1965.
