State Dept’s HR reports finally dropped yesterday. Lost of important sections are gone: election misconduct, corruption, LGBT & women’s rights. Freedom of assembly is gone! For those following the TNR space, that section remains but reports mention only a handful of cases, omitting key incidents.

We welcome today’s Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights report on #transnationalrepression in the UK, which suggests several important ways to counter TNR, including by adopting a formal definition, monitoring and recording incidents, training police, and preventing Interpol abuse.

In a report published on Wednesday, the Joint Committee on Human Rights said transnational repression had increased in recent years, with foreign states using online harassment, lawsuits and physical violence to intimidate people in the UK

One of the things I have enjoyed the most about transitioning from academia to alt ac research in the NGO space is seeing the impacts of research in the wild. This week has been especially significant in that regard.

Our China Dissent Monitor is back! CDM tracks protests in mainland China - an excellent way to see largely hidden dynamics in one of the world's most authoritarian states. This is the kind of research we are at risk of losing permanently amid USG funding cuts.
We are pleased to announce the relaunch of our China Dissent Monitor!

Though we are excited, the project's funding remains limited—we urgently need more support to sustain our team's efforts to track public protest under the CCP regime.

We are concerned by the recent detention of at least 8 current & former Kloop staff members in Kyrgyzstan.

Although some were released after being interrogated, three journalists remain in detention without access to lawyers.

We urge Kyrgyz authorities to respect press freedom & the rule of law.
Kyrgyz authorities have detained a sixth employee of OCCRP partner Kloop today, a day after five current and former staff members were taken in for questioning.

Kloop founder Rinat Tukhvatshin called the questioning “a gross violation of human rights”.

The absence of police (normally ubiquitous in NYC) was striking. Volunteers held hands to block intersections one by one so the march could keep going. Wild.
I asked the one high ranking policeman I saw on 5th Ave why there were so few police. He said “We did not expect anything like this. Don’t tell anyone but I’ve only got 44 officers out here — and it’s a great crowd, great event, no incidents.”
I have never seen anything like this in NYC. 5th Ave covered from 42nd St well to the 20s. Nobody prepared for this volume. Volunteers are holding the traffic on all the side streets. No police in sight. #handsoff
