Maybe people just don't understand the scope of this event because they didn't grow up with total control of cultural institutions by the state? As a person who did, I can tell you that it absolutely sucks. Cultural institutions should have freedom of speech for the society to be healthy

- Kinda. I studied it and it doesn't scare me, but probably won't read all the symbols correctly
- I used to teach it to foreigners. There's so much complex grammar in easiest sentences!

Looked into it a bit more. Real Academia Española website says in these cases the verb can be both singular and plural (both versions are correct). www.rae.es/espanol-al-d...
«La mayoría de los manifestantes», «el resto de los alumnos», «la mitad de los presentes», etc. + verbo

Interesting! Then maybe Duolingo thinks "la mitad de los diarios" is plural because it's several objects ("diarios"). (It works like this in many languages, but I don't know about Spanish).

I think Duolingo thinks it's wrong because of the word "sobre", but highlights the wrong word

It has to do with the social group the speaker belongs to, but body? Are you referring to race/nationality? I'm confused because in many areas of the world people are being treated differently because of their language – but they look exactly the same (have "the same bodies")
