(For anyone new here- I extremely messed up that middle finger in Feb, couldn't move it at all for 6+ months, but finally had my surgical specialist clear me for OT in August. All credit to my OTs for making this happen.)

And finally, Basenjis often get a bad rap, solely based on misunderstandings about their unique and ancient breed. In reality, this is simply a breed that exists exactly as they are. They live wiith no apology but endless curiosity, refuse to settle for anything less than what they want, and will reward you with steadfast loyalty once they decide you're the person for them. This is PARKER.

They will similarly warm up to smaller families with time, so long as their independence is not only respected but celebrated (providing specific 'alone spaces' for the dog to retreat to without interruption, finding and encouraging the ways they enjoy activities with minimal human interaction, like scent trailing or solo agility courses, etc). Once bonded, they are fiercely protective of their chosen people.

They do form strong bonds with their chosen person, but only once that person has consistently proven worthy of their closely-guarded affection. Often their affection will be more about spending time near you, following you around, and sticking close by, especially at first. Over time, they can be more snuggly, although it’s almost always on their own terms.

Basenjis are sighthounds, with a strong drive to run and chase, and a notorious skill for climbing. They are one of the most likely dogs to ignore recall and run off to pursue their own adventures once they catch wind of something they want. Once they're locked in on a pursuit, they're in it to the end.

The Basenji is called "the barkless dog". This is correct in that they do not make the typical "woof" sound. But if you get a Basenji thinking they're a *quiet* dog, you're in for a bit of a shock: these dogs have multiple vocalizations that are anything but quiet. Famously, one of these is called a yodel - a high-pitched, fluctuating awoooo of a sound. Flouting communication expectations? HMMM..

Basenjis are infamously not suited for first-time dog-owners, nor families with small kids. They don't trust strangers and have a tendency to snap if you approach them from behind. If you expect them to do something, you'd better be extremely convincing - positive reinforcement is often not enough; they demand a clear reason for obedience and a solid foundation of existing trust. Even then, they are constantly discerning the validity of each request, and freely ignore any that don't meet their exacting standards. Parker looks exasperatedly/judgementally at Nate from Leverage.

Basenjis are a basal breed, meaning their genetic individuality has been preserved since ancient times, and were likely one of the first domesticated dogs ever. This also means these breeds are unique in temperament, with stronger connections to their wild ancestors. Some of the most common words used to describe Basenjis are "independent, aloof, stubborn, highly intelligent, curious, prone to mischief". Sound like anyone? Two red and white Basenji dogs in the outdoors climb over a rock. They are focused and intent on something out of the shot. Parker from Leverage looks slightly off to the side of the camera with a small smile on her face.

What do we know about Parker? If we're categorizing the ot5 into dog breeds, Parker oftentimes gets put into her own corner as a cat. That's well and good, and I see the argument! But I also have to push back, because at its heart, Leverage is a show about the crew as PACK. Although cats can be social and loving, they are not, at heart, pack animals. Parker, I would argue, IS. "But Oakes, she has to LEARN to be part of their pack, and it takes so long! Surely this points to her inherent nature as a cat!" WRONG. Because she's not a typical dog. Parker is a Basenji.

My favorite blorbo, Bart: a medium sized brown dog with lighter eyebrows and silvery muzzle lies flat on a purple bedspread and grey comforter. 🙈 Reverting to the times of yore in which I refused to end a sentence unless held at gunpoint, this time just to stay within the 3-sentence limit.

Namjoon would leave ADORABLE notes about how each walk went and 100% believes his clientele are the dogs, not the humans who pay him.
