Great work. Most of the supposed “statistics” about autism go from fake to misreading studies to generalizing from nonrepresentative and unreliable sources, like online surveys. You might want to look at the debunked life expectancy stats that have made a comeback lately.

The missing context is years of promoting white supremacist propaganda and race science. The reason we all think it’s a Nazi salute is because Elon’s been tweeting nonstop about how much he loves the white race.

Yes he’s an old school race scientist that Elon has boosted for a while. You don’t follow this guy unless 1) you’re a white supremacist and 2) you’re willing to disregard decades of actual science for the sake of justifying your hatred. This is strong evidence that Elon isn’t that bright.

If Thiel hadn’t put his name on this letter it would have prompted a search for pipe bombs.

(3) a lot of #autism #misinformation gets passed around within the community by supposed allies who don’t check sources. Some of the worst misinformation is made up by charities trying to get attention. The largest autism charity was claiming vaccines could cause autism less than ten years ago.

(2).
3. Are there other sources that agree or disagree with this (a good sign you need to do further reading)
4. Is this really about “all” #autistic people or is it some subset (most studies don’t claim to be representative because it is impossible to identify a representative sample )

2. 36 was the average age of that very small group (27 deaths a year), which was .001% of total deaths.
The authors didn’t report any results regarding life expectancy.
January 5, 2025 at 11:23 PM
1. Also not a life expectancy study. The words “life expectancy” don’t appear in the article. It’s looking at the very small number of cases (1367) over a 15 year period where someone input the ICD code for autism as a contributing cause of death (most common in accidents).

2. This study was misread as a life expectancy study by a charity, which contributed to the myth. The Lancet paper addresses the misreading and confirms that the numbers are incorrect.

1). This isn’t a life expectancy study. They were looking at premature mortality. They looked at medical records over a 20 year period. During that time, 2.6% of the autistic subjects died. The average age of that small number was 54. But the remaining 97.4% of subjects were still alive.
January 5, 2025 at 11:07 PM
The study includes subjects born 70-80 years ago, so it captures the life span going back more than 50 years.

There are no studies to support the 36 year life expectancy myth. This post spread harmful misinformation about #autism for the sake of owning some MAGA D-Lister.
January 5, 2025 at 3:44 PM
If you read the study it says that over a 20 year period, 6.4% of the study group died. The average age for that small group at death was 39. The remaining 93.6% were still alive. This study has nothing to do with lifespan. It was looking for common characteristics in the small group that died.

This life expectancy stat is a myth. The cited report didn’t study life expectancy. A recent UK study that examined life expectancy put average life expectancy in the 70s, but even those figures could be low.

Estimating life expectancy and years of life lost for autistic people in the UK: a matched cohort study
The findings indicate that there is a group of autistic people who experience premature mortality, which is of significant concern. There is an urgent need for investigation into the reasons behind this. However, our estimates suggest that the widely reported statistic that autistic people live 16-years less on average is likely incorrect. Nine out of 10 autistic people may have been undiagnosed across the time-period studied. Hence, the results of our study do not generalise to all autistic people.

People are so obsessed with showing he’s a capital N Nazi that they let slide his obvious hatred of Black people. His brand of white supremacy isn’t anything fancy or complicated. Just ordinary dumbass racism.

That number has always been a myth, that ironically, just won’t die. Most of these “x% of autistic people” stats are wrong or overstated at best. Hard to conduct a survey when there’s no easy way to identify your subjects.
