Kind of tough to see people responding to RFK Jr’s #autism misinformation with their own bad facts and made up statistics. Some of the myths RFK have been spouting now have been allied to circulate for years because people never check sources.

>70% of citing authors misrepresent findings on mortality in autistic people, often falsely claiming “people with autism die 16 years earlier” or have a “54-year life expectancy.”

It’s now been ten days and Elon Musk still hasn’t said he’s not a Nazi.

It’s been six days and Elon Musk has still not denied that he’s a Nazi.

Apparently people don’t think the fake #autism life expectancy stats are harmful. They haven’t talked to a parent who was told their child won’t live to middle age. Or someone struggling with suicidal thoughts who was told they won’t live that long anyways.

(1) Some things to consider before you post that #autism statistic, to make sure you’re not spreading misinformation.

1. Do I have a reliable source for this? (Like an actual study, not some article I read)
2. Do I understand the source? (Like did you read it, not what someone else said)

I’m not sure how I Saw the TV Glow landed in the horror category on IMDb and Max. It was not what I was expecting. But it was devastating in an entirely different way.

If you Google #autistic life expectancy, the first results are misinformation from ABA clinic websites. These aren’t reliable sources, they’re advertisements. The 38, 54 or any other low numbers they post are false. Those websites don’t have an incentive to actually research what they’re saying.

#elonmusk is going to learn that $244 million doesn’t buy you Donald Trump, it just rents him for a little bit.

If you are trying to figure out if an #autism website is reliable or not, one good question to ask — is this website trying to sell something? Whether it’s books, assessment services, ABA therapy, videos or diets, those websites aren’t objective resources. They are advertisements.

It’s a great irony that so many of us #autistic people love our facts and statistics but the supposed statistics about us are usually fake or wrong. It’s not like there’s a directory that lists all the autistic people so you can’t come up with a remotely representative sample.

I wish there was an online test that could reliably tell you if you had #autism. But unfortunately there isn’t one. I know it can feel validating to “pass” the RAADS-R, but the reality is a lot of non-autistic people “pass” too. The websites that host the tests can be misleading.

#Autistic lawyer here. Has anyone worked for a legal employer that recognizes #autistic or neurodivergent lawyers or employees, whether through diversity and inclusion or some other policy, and has it had any effect on your employment experience?

(1/3) New to the platform so I’ll give another shot at stopping misinformation. The low #autistic “life expectancy” numbers people keep repeating are hurtful myths. It’s not 34, 39, 54, 56 or 16 years less that average. There never were any studies to back these numbers.

I’m fine with romance options with fellow adventurers in Skyrim or fantasy games, but in sci-fi games it feels too much like creeping on coworkers.

So I just decided to tell a bunch of people I hadn’t seen in 30 years I was #autistic. Not sure how many more decades I need to wait before talking to them again.

The life expectancy of people with autism is not 36 or 39 or 54 or 16 years less than average. There are NO studies to support these claims, they are myths based on misreading studies. A recent study debunked these claims and found life expectancies into the 70s, slightly less than average.
