as an addendum, i don't think it's true that the populace lacks culture, either, or that it's an issue of artists vs non-artists-- i think if EVERYONE could afford a reasonable living, then more people would have time to go to museums/shows/etc and engage with culture in a more challenging way

if you want artists to make weirder art, you have to create stable living conditions that allow them to. homogeneity isn't a matter of artists lacking culture-- there are many soulful artists out there-- it's a matter of unregulated corporate dominance combined with artists who cant afford to create
