I'm reading Paper of Wreckage, an oral history of the New York Post, and came across Mike Vaccaro reminiscing about the time in 2003 when he brutally zinged then Mets GM Steve Phillips.
MIKE VACCARO: I was covering a Nets playoff series in Milwaukee. Gallo asked me to stay in Milwaukee and cover the Mets series that weekend. It was May and the Mets were already falling apart. I wrote a column on general manager Steve Phillips. He’d assembled a team of profoundly unlikable players, I would not write this now, but I wrote then that Mets fans aren’t just mad, they want Steve Phillips’s head on a pike and they want to put that pike on the Triborough Bridge. Back then, I’m surprised they didn’t put a cartoon of Phillips’s bloody head on a pike on the back page. That Saturday I reported to the ballpark in Milwaukee and Jay Horwitz, the PR director, said, “We might have a problem with Steve. He’s gonna want to see you when you’re in the clubhouse.” I said, “That’s fine.” In those situations, I’m not looking for a fight. If you’re going to rip them, you got to let them rip you back. Steve brings me into this empty office. He purposely kept the door open. He wanted the players to hear him air me out. He aired me out, and I took it. Then he went a bit farther than he should have. He said, “You made my wife cry. That’s the worst part.” Now, the backstory is that Steve Phillips was a serial adulterer. That had already been in the paper. He’d been suspended by the Mets because he just couldn’t stay faithful to his wife for, like, more than ten minutes at a time. I said, “You know what, Steve? I’m not the only one in this room that has done that, am I?” As soon as I said it, here comes Steve Phillips, about ready to punch me in the jaw. Jay got in the middle and he dragged Steve out of there. I walked out, and I’m a little shaky, because you don’t like it when somebody yells at you for five minutes straight, and Tom Glavine, Al Leiter, and a bunch of guys came over and said, “That was awesome.” Phillips got fired about three weeks later.

Multiple teams are interested in trading for Kodai Senga, per Will Sammon.

Senga is attracting trade interest from multiple teams, league sources said. Some clubs view Senga, 32, as an interesting buy-low candidate after he experienced an injury and ended the season in Triple-A due to poor performance. It is unclear, however, how open the Mets would be to trading him, though they’ve had conversations about their starting pitchers, including Senga, people briefed on the talks said.

According to Bob Nightengale, the Mets lost $350 million last year, but they will still acquire one or two front-line starters this offseason.

And, echoing what Pat Ragazzo wrote Saturday, Pete Alonso is a goner unless he signs a "deal they can't turn down."

IF/OF Jose Rojas has agreed to terms with the Mets on a minor league deal, per source, and will receive an invite to MLB camp. If added to the roster, he will earn $820K pro-rated.

Rojas has 83 games of MLB experience. Led the AAA International League with 32 HR last season.

It was interesting to see the different obits for Paul Tagliabue on networks with NFL contracts. ESPN ran a hagiography narrated by Jeremy Schapp. To NBC's credit, towards the end of Maria Taylor's narration she mentioned the whole concussion thing.

These new details from last summer's confrontation between Rob Manfred and Bryce Harper are absolutely insane.

MLB officials threatening players will "end up in a ditch" for disrespecting Manfred is outrageous behavior.

The mystery has swirled through the art world for nearly a decade: Who bought that weird toilet designed by an artist? And not just any toilet — one made from 100 kilograms of solid gold, 18-karat. It even works, if you call a plumber for the hookup. It turns out that one of the wealthiest men in America has owned it the whole time: Steve Cohen, the billionaire financier who also owns the New York Mets. Cohen is reported to have bought the gold toilet, created as a sculpture by the conceptual artist Maurizio Cattelan, from an art gallery in 2017. On Nov. 18, it will be coming to auction, with bidding to start at about $10 million. Five experts with knowledge of the deal, who requested anonymity to discuss a private business matter, said Cohen was the consignor. The gold toilet re-emerged last week at the Sotheby’s auction house with a glowing news release about how Cattelan had made the golden loo as a sculpture in 2016 and called it “America.”

According to a rival NL scout, the Mets recognize that their clubhouse is in need of a culture shift following last season's slow collapse. The expectation is that the Mets will float utility man Jeff McNeil on the trade market and let franchise cornerstone first baseman Pete Alonso walk in free agency unless he takes a team friendly deal.
