The comparison of the linguists' answers to this prompt as compared to everyone else is 👩🍳💋, just a perfect encapsulation of how wary we are of these questions, how reluctant we are to give a definitive answer, how much we defer to needing data from language users, and how we accept change over time.
Here it is. 18 academics from across a wide array of disciplines weigh in: is a hot dog a sandwich? Plus @davidswanson.bsky.social made the most delightful illustration I've ever seen. buttondown.email/theswordandt...

Evergreen reminder for linguists: don’t submit your papers to Lingua! (a web search for “zombie lingua” pulls up lots about this.) Don’t publish with Oxford UP! (see below; I declined writing an invited chapter a couple years ago for this exact reason)

Excited to share my primer on simulation-based power analysis using R, Python, and Julia! Based on @debruine.bsky.social's approach applied to data collected by @kirsten-adam.bsky.social, I hope it's a helpful tool for those starting with simulations. Check it out: cjungerius.github.io/powersim/

Key Q: what predicts how much young kids (👶)talk?
How much 🗣 kids heard predicted how much 👶talked, but other factors, e.g. mom’s education, didn’t. #PsychSci #DevPsy 🗣💬
