All the examples I can find of emulating HLSL QuadAll/QuadAny with just ddx_fine/ddy_fine seem way over-complicated, I found a much simpler solution and I'm posting it here in case some random graphics programmer finds it useful and/or tells me why it's broken:

I'm not good at UI but I've at least figured out the Unity UI Toolkit well enough to replace the IMGUI mess I had previously. Starting to feel usable!

And it may look familiar because it's ShaderForge, hackily modified to work with Unity 6 and my custom raytraced render pipeline! Once I improve this some more, I'm hoping it can serve as a replacement for Bryce's procedural texture editor

I've broken fog and the skybox and added an ugly diffuse-lit sphere, so this might not seem like a big step forward, but I'm very excited: I managed to add a node-based shader editor to my project

Finally an answer to the question

The reason I love it so much is the way that it lays out the boxes; I can directly see a deeply nested massive file and its whole hierarchy without needing to change sorting order or expand trees.

Yes, it's real time! Using DirectX Raytracing in Unity, so requires a compatible GPU - probably a no-go for games - but would be interesting to see how close a non-RT version could get. (Here frame pacing not ideal so you see lag, and lighting dir not currently updating with sun position in editor)

Doing some renders in between little refactors of my render pipeline. You'd almost think it was Bryce.

For once I cranked the supersampling and ray depth, still renders in a fraction of a second.
