What I’ll take away most from this class is how communication is unique to each person. Communication shapes how we think, connect, and understand others. I see this in my work with non-verbal and pre-verbal kids, noticing how gestures, expressions, and actions carry meaning. #UTcommtheory

My favorite theory to learn about was the Family Communication Patterns Theory. Honestly, it felt very therapeutic to write and read about. It feels like something I will carry with me long after this semester. #UTcommtheory

I believe Agenda Setting theory is still relevant. An example I think is my mother-in-law and the kind of posts that find her feed (conservative) and what she sends to me. It is clear her algorithm shapes a different reality than mine. It shows how platforms guide what we care about. #UTcommtheory

A recent example of agenda setting is how weight loss drugs keep showing up everywhere in the media. There are constant ads, celebrities talking about them, and people online arguing about who should use them and debate on health. All that attention keeps these drugs on people’s minds #UTcommtheory

I have a parasocial relationship with Rhett and Link from GMM. I have watched them almost daily for 8 years. I keep up with their podcast, their music. What they bring to my life is comfort and consistency. Through moving, school, new jobs, they are always a click away. #UTcommtheory

Once you realize how much media Disney owns, including Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars, Hulu, it starts to feel like they control almost everything we watch. They shape culture while making massive profits and it’s hard not to notice how much influence they have over what becomes popular. #UTcommtheory

As a Palestinian American, I think I’ve shown "non-assertive assimilation". I usually avoid talking about the conflict since it’s such a sensitive topic and can make things tense fast. It’s easier to just stay quiet, even if that means not really sharing that part of who I am. #UTcommtheory

I respond best to the participation approach because it values everyone’s input. I think organizations would benefit from it as it builds trust, fairness, and leads to stronger and more inclusive decisions. More companies and employees would thrive if everyone felt included. #UTcommtheory

An organization that I think could use a cultural shift is the DNC. Many rural communities feel ignored and that the DNC clearly favors established politicians over grassroots candidates. I believe they need to start focusing on local leaders to build trust and connection to voters. #UTcommtheory

An example of ethos is a pediatrician saying, “Vaccines save lives. I’ve seen the harm preventable diseases cause, you should trust the medical experts.” This shows ethos because it relies on the speaker’s experience and credibility, making it more trustworthy than just emotions. #UTcommtheory

This meme captures the cognitive dissonance I experience when I tell people gambling is a reckless thing to do, but then betting for a team to win the world series. I try to justify it by saying it's just for the playoffs, so it's different. #UTcommtheory

I’m usually the one who overshares, so I’m rarely left speechless, but a woman next to me on the plane started telling me really dark and heavy tragedies she’d been dealing with right away. We had four more hours together and I truly felt bad that I didn't know what to say to help her. #UTcommtheory

My family is very laissez-faire. We don’t have much of an emotional bond and everyone does their own thing. This has made me very independent, maybe why I’ve lived in five states in nine years. My mom went to another country alone at 14 for boarding school if that tells you anything. #UTcommtheory

I delayed responding to my younger sister Seneca’s morning Snapchat message until evening. She followed up with messages on other apps to check in, proving how much she values communication and our ritual, which helps us stay close even though we live far apart. #UTcommtheory

My I vs. Me really shows up when someone drives recklessly or I get cut off for example. My "I" wants to honk, yell, or flip them off for instant satisfaction, but my "Me" knows it’s dangerous and could hurt me or others, so I sigh dramatically, think 'they can’t drive,' and move on. #UTcommtheory

I’m more drawn to the objective approach because, as an RBT, I focus on measuring and tracking observable behaviors. As the text explains, objective theorists aim to discover truths about communication and predict outcomes. #UTcommtheory

My favorite is quantum superposition, which suggests that particles can exist in multiple states at once until they are observed, challenging reality. The definition of theory as a set of systematic, informed hunches, superposition fits, supported by experiments like the double-slit.
