Mozi wasn't just a renowned philosopher, but an inventor of early machinery). Don't they look so silk punk! A lot of the cool mechanical contraptions you see in Chinese historical fiction and wuxia fantasies probably take as much influences from Warring States 墨家机关 as stuff like #steampunk. 2/2

The annual National Art Academy graduation exhibition in Hangzhou is usually much anticipated. This year, some particular entries by a master student called Nie Shichang, stole the show. Inspired by both new tech and the mechanical arts of the Mo Clan. 1/

I think those famously swordsmen-friendly condors might have new company, armoured wild geese. #wuxia

China's been producing some excellent thrillers and dark mysteries, but its ideas of #horror fiction are still somewhat schlocky. Zhou Yu's supernatural horror about a filmmaker who returns with his crew, to the site where his friend disappeared years ago. A refreshing creepy #film for a change.

The #horror of the #gothic, the wonder of #scifi have always bled into each other. In 1977, Ridley Scott blurred the boundaries, introducing us to the xenomorph in Alien. I'll be in Turin 23.11.25 to discuss how they blend into Chinese #popculture and sign copies of Sinophagia, now out in Italian.

Came across this for the new wuxia #film of The Invincible Swordsman ("Laughing Swordsman" based on Jin Yong novels, released earlier this year). A love letter to classic 20th century Chinese film poster art. I've been excited about Sammo Hung's role as the hermit master, he looks magnificent.

The #scifi and the #gothic have always been entwined. Chinese ideas of the gothic is its own thing, and has long inspired SF writers in China. I'll be at the Mufant Museum in Turin on 23.11 to talk about how they blend into Chinese genre fiction, and Sinophagia, which is now out in Italian! #books

Cool new trend in Chinese interior decorating, it's all about trad styles for the young generations. Some get designers to do it, I'm more impressed with DYI efforts, not that expensive or hard to source in a country that makes a lot of all kinds of stuff. #popculture

A fantastic book launch yesterday that was a pleasure to moderate. Now chilling with Posha Shuangshu's book, featuring 10 longish stories and a total of 100 yao. I picked it up in China some years ago, it's been a donghua and being made into a live action Cdrama. I knew I was onto something. #books

I was trying to find the nicest way I can to say what I need to say, then I find out that this "Mandy Wong" who's got a human profile pic, is an in-house developed AI. No wonder I felt there was something off about this article, which barely skims the surface of the subject.

I've always been a lover of the gothic, whether in classic #literature, modern fiction or Chinese genre, which is why I'm thrilled to be at the Mufant Museum in Turin to discuss #scifi, the #gothic and Sinophagia, as well as sign copies of the Italian edition of my #horror collection! #books

I met the lovely Amélie Skoda at this year's Story Feast, which we were both part of. See her in conversation about her debut Bethnal Green which "explores the themes of sacrifice and heartbreak...and the will to build a life of one's own against the odds" #books www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/amelie-sko...

Spotlighting Dongji Island, which has the excellent Guan Hu as one of the directors, about an area of WWII history relatively unknown until works such as Fang Li's recent documentary on the Lisbon Maru. It's on international release. #film

Now also a high profile #film. This came to my attention when we were exploring possibilities of translating Ma's longer works. He's great at building panoramic and zooming in on the small characters, as he does in The Great Migration, which I HAVE curated and you can read in English.

Historical fantasy author Ma Boyong's bestseller, The Lychee Road, told from the view point of a petty official in the 8th century, who must get 'exotic' lychees from the newly acquired southern territories (my home region) all the way to the emperor in Chang'an in the north, still fresh. 1/

thanks for the enthusiasm, helped me resist opening them for now!

That's right, hoped you like that story. There's quite a few versions of the Shanhaijing in English, I recommend this one for quality :)

Spooky reading from the Yin Yang Pot in Sinophagia, spice-averse narrator goes out at night looking for food, ends up at a mysterious hotpot restaurant with his ex, annoyed she keeps insisting he eats from the spicy side, he rebelliously dunks toufu into the non-spicy white soup... #horror #books

Love these mummy and ghost bao. Can we just call them bao (bao means "bun" already). It's like "chai tea" all over again.

This is worth a post, based on Bailu Chengshuang's AU historical novel, Tencent show popular on Netflix, simply for being well produced, entertaining Cdrama. Not a big fan of court power struggles, but just seeing two gorgeous leads kept me going for a dozen eps, & that the odds are so against her.
