I’m a past winner of the Orwell Prize & won partly because I exposed Vote Leave’s unlawful activities.

Michael Gove was its co-convener & refused to answer a single q. He’s now a judge of the prize & our world is truly one that Orwell would recognise

Michael Gove Made Orwell Prize Judge Despite Record of Attacking Journalists and Dodging Scrutiny
Critics say "Orwell would have enjoyed the irony" of the former Conservative minister's appointment

This took absolutely ages, so if you'd like to buy us a coffee at ko-fi.com/cassetteboy we'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

The reporting on Charlie Kirk’s killer in the UK & US highlights again how fundamentally ill equipped mainstream media is to report on political violence in the digital age.

They do not know anything about online far right meme culture & it’s starting to do real harm. #r4today

In today’s Vatnik Soup, I’ll cover the agenda-setting and flood of disinformation that spread on X and other platforms right after Charlie Kirk’s assassination. It’s far from the first or last time a tragedy has been weaponized for political purposes.

Good morning, I've written a piece about the prime minister. I spoke to several dozen sources, including government insiders, former legal colleagues and campaigners to ask: what happened to Keir Starmer the heroic human rights lawyer? www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
Starmer v Starmer: why is the former human rights lawyer so cautious about defending human rights?
The long read: Given his career as a human rights barrister, it was hoped Keir Starmer would be the PM to restore the UK’s commitment to international law. The reality tells a different story

In today’s #vatniksoup, I’ll introduce a South African-American businessman and social media figure, Elon Musk (@elonmusk). He’s best-known for being the wealthiest man in the world, running companies like Tesla Inc., SpaceX and Twitter/X, and for parroting the Kremlin’s propaganda narratives.

V good piece by @emhilton.bsky.social on how the dominant political response to the violence in Amsterdam serves to shore up support for Israel's war and boost an anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim narrative in the West while doing nothing to tackle antisemitism either. www.972mag.com/amsterdam-ma...
Weaponizing Jewish fear, from Tel Aviv to Amsterdam
Rhetoric about ‘pogroms’ and ‘Jew hunts’ aims to obscure reality by generating mass hysteria — which can then be used to advance a far-right agenda.

Imagine sitting down for a drink or a meal with people whose company you enjoyed & being told by management that half of the table would be now occupied by people who just wanted to shout ‘C**t’ at you. The exodus has absolutely nothing to do with ‘opinions’. Media reports must reflect this more.

So the GOP is just currently covering up potential sex crimes against children by one of their members and instead of releasing the report, they are trying to make that person the Attorney General of the United States? Do we have that right?
