This is a story about ICE in Memphis. I'm riding my bike to work tomorrow for the first time in almost three weeks. It took me a while to decide if I wanted to share this story in public, but here goes. I got scared off the bike by an encounter with ICE. They close followed me for over a mile. Imagine having a giant SUV on your rear wheel going 12 mph (on a wide road with plenty of room to pass) for a solid five minutes. There were two sedans behind the SUV, and they stayed together, a little caravan of intimidation. I was a likely target, making my way along the northern edge of a low-income, black and brown neighborhood, clearly riding the bike for transportation, not as a sport. They stayed with me until we approached a four-way stop. The SUV pulled ahead of me, stopped and waited until I caught up. The cars stayed behind, boxing me in. At the stop sign they could see my face for the first time. They took a good, long look. I guess I wasn't such a likely target after all. They let me go after that. Someone asked me if it didn't scare me to ride through that neighborhood. The honest answer: "It never did before." So that's my ICE story. It doesn't sound like much now that I've written it out, and it's certainly not much compared to what others have experienced, but it was enough to leave me rattled and fearful of doing something that normally brings me great joy.
