Just PhD-ed at University of Maryland. Peking U alum. Interested in how we represent objects, structures and aesthetics cross language and vision, with EEG/SQUID & OPM MEG/.... Personal website: https://sites.google.com/view/xinchiyu/home

Just had the new Shakshuka McMuffin today at McDonalds, and it was divine... 😋 Apparently this item is only available in McDonalds in China right now, but I sincerely hope it gets available everywhere...

Nice days in the valleys deeper into Manchuria (NE China)… I later knew these valleys are called 小和尚沟 (little monk valley) and 木鱼沟 (wooden fish valley) which is literally hilarious.

You know our city museum does not have much funding when you see these Manchu soldiers wearing… err… puffer jackets??????

This year’s VSS was an absolute feast on visual aesthetics, and I was happy to be a part of it! Had numerous fun discussions on language, vision, memory, beauty, language of thought, DNNs and beyond; all at *Vision Science* Society conference. What a conference!

Just putting up one of the figures in our poster to lure you... aesthetics, DNN, large-scale behavioral testing, memorability... come to see our fever dream poster

Excited to share my new preprint! Extending prior work on visual working memory load, we showed that speech-induced mental imagery load during eye closure also similarly suppresses posterior alpha power, suggesting a shared pointer system across vision and language. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Decided to add some "really unprofessional" content on my personal website. :)

Excited to share my first OPM-MEG project! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... OPM-MEG provides unprecedented opportunities for mobile MEG recording, but what comes with mobility is movement-induced low-frequency artifacts. 1/3

Well apparently in Manchu hachin (ᡥᠠᠴᡳᠨ) is both the Lantern Festival and type/category lol. Enjoy your Lantern Festival if you celebrate it!

Yay! See you at this year's @vssmtg.bsky.social VSS! Excited to bring together my undergrad advisors (Yan Bao, Ernst Pöppel) and Zane (Weizhen Xie) in one project. With a fun set of abstract paintings by contemporary artist LaoZhu, we found that lower activation in DNNs predict higher beauty.

New Year decors. Apart from single characters (Fig 1), collapsing multiple characters (Fig 2-4) seem to be less common. Fig 2 (招財進寶) is common but Fig 3-4 are rare nowadays afaik. What is Fig 4? 學好孔(?)(皿?).

Meanwhile in my hometown, the first Domino’s pizza made 85,000 USD on 12/24, setting a world record for this franchise.

In this Perspective paper, I outline a potentially-fruitful research program trying to bring these literatures and insights together, by testing how neural markers for pointers generalize across task goals, paradigms and modalities, etc. 2/2 link: osf.io/preprints/ps...

This work complements other works on how the semantics of individual objects affects VWM, and provides novel evidence for grouping in VWM facilitated by *arbitrary* semantic associations *across multiple objects*. 2/2

Excited to share our preprint for my first project with Zane (Dr. Weizhen Xie, University of Maryland)! :) We found that semantic associations across real-world objects promotes VWM performance, but only when the encoding time was brief (0.2s). Preprint: osf.io/preprints/ps... 1/2

See you at VSS next year! Really grateful to all the fun and inspiring discussions and meetings with old and new friends here. 😇

See you Monday morning at Banyan Breezeway. :) I will present our work showing that biological and non-biological objects recruit the same set of VWM pointers, and suggesting why some studies did not observe an interference effect. Preprint: osf.io/preprints/ps...

Excited for my first VSS! Can't wait to catch up with old and new friends. And "by the way" I am graduating next summer and I'm actively looking for postdoc opportunities. 😆
