All this happened, more or less.
I hate to break it to you, but whatever you think of your own, MY kid is the best.

I got home from an early afternoon bike ride to find she'd baked these fresh, warm dark-chocolate chip muffins while I was gone. Just what my depleted glycogen stores needed.

I've been training and riding with a rack, cages and bikepacking bags for so long, I almost forgot what she looked like naked.

On my trip to Big Bend earlier this week, I did a really good job of not thinking about the world, economy, politics, etc. But at one point, while marveling at the Santa Elena Canyon, it occurred to me that, in geological terms, the Earth will forget about all this in about an instant.

On Saturday, I passed the smallest Buc-ees in Texas. The selection of snacks was disappointing, as were the usually clean, plentiful restrooms and array of fueling stations.

I've been through the desert on a horse with no name...

Achievement Unlocked! #Bikepacking at Big Bend National Park (Texas) with my #Salsa Cutthroat.

Hot and challenging. Many lessons learned. Maybe I'll make a documentary video.

The prediction market Kalshi indicates a 68% chance of a government shutdown next week. That will likely mean Big Bend National Park will close... just in time to ruin the #bikepacking trip I've been planning for months.

Yesterday's Big Bend Trip prep-ride focused on nutrition/hydration and 6+ hrs on the bike in the sun.

I do not recommend casually riding Leander Rd to #GeorgetownTX. The rumble strip on the minimal shoulder = uncomfortable and sketchy.

Also, never pass up an opportunity to stop and look at water.

Never miss an opportunity to stop and look at water, even if it's whatever this is.

Getting a little nervous about my Big Bend #bikepacking trip. It's about a month away and, as of now, all the backcountry roads I wanted to ride are still closed. I have a Plan B (and C, D, E and F), but I'm still going to be a little disappointed.

Had a bad pixel (last-good marked with tape).
For PermaTrack, use JST conx's to keep sections segmented (for easy removal/install).
I use these solder conx's to splice.
Always replace last-good + 1 (the output of the 'good' may not be).
Push pixels in. Don't bend at the soldered joint.

#Bikepacking -lite/recovery ride this morning.
Packed my stove, fuel and pot so I could make a cup of coffee at my turn-around point. Missed sunrise, though. Next time, leave a little earlier.

45mi fully loaded #bikepacking shakedown cruise this AM. Replaced the bottle cages in the frame with a CrankTank4, giving me ~6.5L of water capacity for my Big Bend trip.

Total gear is ~20lbs + ~18lbs of water and food. The Cutty handles great, but you def know you're carrying it on the climbs.

My wife found these at a local Chinese grocery.
There's no going back to milk chocolate.

Did a #bikepacking overnighter at River Ranch County Park (Liberty Hill, TX) to gauge weight, handling, packing efficiency (in preparation for the Big Bend trip). Ride there was definitely harder than it should have been (didn't eat enough).

Another #bikepacking gear shakedown cruise this morning. This time, I have the Sweet Roll on the bars to hold my tent, so plenty of room in other bags for everything else.

When cycling, never miss an opportunity to stop and look at water.

Prepping for a 3-day unsupported solo ride thru Big Bend Ntl Park. Camped in the backyard last night. This AM, made coffee, cooked breakfast, then packed (almost) everything on the bike for a shakedown cruise. Was hoping to avoid a handlebar roll, but I need more room.

Just returned from our 'last-family-road trip-before-school-starts'. Drove to St Louis, then parts of Route 66 on the way home. You don't see this every day, unless you work downtown in Oklahoma City.

This morning's ride was the evil one.

This is the breakdown of 2025 Tour Divide riders by age group (from @bikepackingcom.bsky.social). I thought if I waited til I had time (after I retired), I'd be too old. But now... I think it's back on the bucket list.

Evening ride. One of my favorite spots to stop and breathe in a big gulp of serenity to wrap up the day.

Brushy Creek Regional Trail. Cedar Park, TX

Instead of a bike lane, they give you this mutli-use sidewalk... until you don't even get that.
July 13, 2025 at 12:57 AM
I never go this way anymore, and today I'm reminded why.
Instead of a protected bike lane, we get a multi-use ski slalom.
At least they keep the tree branches mostly out of the way, which can't be said for several other spots.
