During An Gorta Mor (the Great Famine), the friendly and easily found Leprus was the prime source of protein for many who would otherwise have starved. This led to a natiowide population crash, and fewer than 500 Leprus remain in the wild, nearly all of these in a wildlife preserve in the Burren.

There's a rich folklore around leprechauns, most famously how Fionn of the Fianna learned how to make whiskey by watching a Leprus ferment some barley it had stolen from his crop.

Similar to corvids, the male Leprus is known to be attracted to shiny objects, like glass and metal. They hoard these in their nests, or 'pots', again to attract a mate. Prior to the 1800s, rural people would sometimes track a Leprus to its pot in the hope of looting it.

Leprus are small, reddish primates with a distinctive chitter (te-tay-te-tay) and an unpredictable disposition. As they age, moss grows in its fur, giving rise to the myth they are green, except for the 'beard', a tuft of fur at the base of the chin the males keep fastidiously groomed for mating.
