Boyd where two bisexual couples attend a funeral for the father of one of the husbands (Kevin) and delve into the past with Kevin's brother. This text takes place after the funeral around a bonfire where Kevin confronts his brother about an incident of violence in their past when Kevin discovered his brother's gay secret. “You’re fulla shit. Fake news,” Geoffrey turned away. “It’s not fake news, I remember it perfectly. We were in the living room. We were at the computer… I even remember what we were looking at,” Kevin said pointedly. “Do you remember?” A bell rang inside Geoffrey’s skull — he did remember — and a panicked look crossed his face. His eyes darted to Eric, and Anna, and Daria, who stared back. He glanced at me and I saw him as he was back in the basement, being open and honest about himself. I pictured him coming clean now, not only owning up to the childhood violence, and apologizing and asking forgiveness, but also owning up to his other secret. His closet door was already half-open. I thought for sure he’d come stumbling out. But he didn’t. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Geoffrey snorted and turned to stare into the fire. “I’m talking about two surgeries,” Kevin needled. “And screws and a metal plate in my cheek — that got infected twice. I’m talking about that. “You wiped out on Radley Hill, you little fuckin’ baby,” Geoffrey insisted. “Well my bike didn’t have a scratch on it. And the doctors wondered why I didn’t have road rash on my hands or arms or anywhere. I guess I fell off my bike and landed only on my face. Fortunately your fist was there to catch all the blood.” Kevin got louder. “Fake news,” Geoffrey chirped. Suddenly furious, Kevin lunged “It’s not fake news” punctuating the word fake with a two-handed push that knocked his older brother backwards.

I’m just a kid I don’t know anything I’m just a kid!” Kevin’s eyes glazed as he stared into the middle distance. “Why do I have to figure this out on my own?” Kevin cringe-laughed and covered his face with his hand. His shoulders slumped and it looked like — shit… Was he about to cry? I turned him away from me so he could stand under the privacy of the hot water. I rubbed his shoulders while he wept.

I juggle multiple projects. I divide my time between new writing (usually right when I wake up) and revision (usually at night when I can steal an hour) That way I don't have the hangover when one thing is finished -- because there's always new work emerging that's exciting me. Usually.
