Tumblr post saying: Actually, this gets its own post. The European eel is a critically endangered species of fish, but in my home country you can still fish for it inland in July. This is because the European eel is simply so good and so delicious that not eating it? That's no way of living. The European eels of the world have decreased in numbers to only five percent of what they used to be pre-1980's, but you see, they are just that flavourful... I mean, of course the regulations in place for eel fishing here (Finland) are actually much stricter than they would have to be according to EU legislation. In that way, the European eels here should be fine, no? Think about it this way. Wouldn't it be really fucking weird if, for any other critically endangered animal, there was a period of time in the year where you CAN legally hunt them? What if you could hunt African forest elephants as much as you wanted for one month of the year? Or perhaps the gharial? The red wolf? The vaquita? That'd be MENTAL. But when it's the eels it's um... okay? Since we're on the topic of endangered fish. One of my uni lecturers believes that the Finnish lake salmon, a critically endangered subspecies of the Atlantic salmon, is already functionally extinct due to just how low their population numbers are. You can still keep nets in their migration rivers, of course.
