I love to see tons of people discovering Brassica oleracea. Did you know a little over half of sugar in the USA comes from the same plant species as the red beets you hated as a kid and the fancy Swiss chard salad (Beta vulgaris)?

From one of our research studies this year. The left side is untreated, and nearly all the green is an economically damaging weed (kochia, Bassia scoparia). The right side was sprayed with dicamba herbicide, which controlled the emerging kochia.

And here is a potentially more useful version that shows the states where Palmer amaranth is considered native (usually only the Southern portion of these states):

🧪 Here is the updated figure showing changes in herbicide use intensity over time. Blue lines show the trend from 1990 through 2015 (period in previous publication). Red lines show the trend for a more recent period, 2005 through the most recent year available (2021-2023).

The blue lines show a steady increase in all crops (maize, soybean, coton, rice, spring wheat, and winter wheat. Red lines show the average trend for a more recent time period, from 2006 through 2023; for maize and soybean, the herbicide use intensity increased much more rapidly over the last 20 years compared to earlier periods. For cotton and winter wheat, the trend was abou the same. For rice and spring wheat, the increase has slowed.
