I kill things for science (mostly plants). I study crops, weeds, and sometimes other things at a University in Wyoming (but this is a personal account). I like taking photos and writing #Rstats code, but not at the same time.

I love to see tons of people discovering Brassica oleracea. Did you know a little over half of sugar in the USA comes from the same plant species as the red beets you hated as a kid and the fancy Swiss chard salad (Beta vulgaris)?

The photo is straight out of the camera, but for some reason looks to me like the duck was just pasted there with a photo editor. 😂🦆 #photography

From one of our research studies this year. The left side is untreated, and nearly all the green is an economically damaging weed (kochia, Bassia scoparia). The right side was sprayed with dicamba herbicide, which controlled the emerging kochia.

Why is the headline 'Trump ups the pressure...' when it should say 'Trump expresses imperialist desires...'

Why do media outlets keep pretending this is normal politics?

And here is a potentially more useful version that shows the states where Palmer amaranth is considered native (usually only the Southern portion of these states):

For my weed science peeps, here's an updated version of the Palmer amaranth distribution map. I've uploaded it (along with the source for each state) to figshare in case that is useful. figshare.com/articles/fig...

🧪 Here is the updated figure showing changes in herbicide use intensity over time. Blue lines show the trend from 1990 through 2015 (period in previous publication). Red lines show the trend for a more recent period, 2005 through the most recent year available (2021-2023).
