Nearly 5” of snow at NWS Duluth!

Update: verified. Bonafide firehose of lake effect snow at the head of the lake this afternoon/evening! Challenging to predict - most models had it shifting eastward quickly. #MNwx

Definitely hints of “overachieving” lake affect snowfall this afternoon/evening for Duluth. Big fluffy flakes are falling now and there should be a good couple of hours for convergent winds to persist before the band shifts eastward.

Fewest Gale Warnings issued by NWS Duluth since 2015 - not a perfect way to analyze it but tells the story that there’s been below normal number of synoptic storms this fall.

First morning of snow making at Lutsen Mountain! What a beautiful sight to see - let’s go winter!

A wet Halloween night for parts of the Twin Ports - but hey, it’s pretty warm!

Welp, that’s all for the growing season in the Twin Ports! Coldest morning of the fall so far!

Absolutely fantastic sun shower/rainbow conditions this afternoon!

Morning severe storms on the iron range appears to have caused considerable damage (lots of downed trees) nearly 10k customers without power between the two largest utilities. The initial NWS warning had nearly an hour of lead time for places like Hibbing! #MNwx

Happy All Pints North!

Hot and humid summer day turned downpour. Happy that we got off the deck about 5 minutes before it poured, but I bet a lot of people in Canal Park were surprised!

It’s always fascinating to see how a decaying thunderstorm complex falls apart as it outruns the best instability/forcing.

This cloud-to-ground lightning strike west of Carlton is a great example of why these isolated pop up storms - difficult to predict with neighborhood-level precision more than minutes out - can produce lightning with little to no warning. #MNwx

Low temperatures this morning, June 1st. It can be a short gardening season in the Northland! (These cool temps reflect how dry it is out there.)

Why yes that is SLEET falling in Canal Park on May 20th! #MNwx

Smoke from a wildfire (“Camphouse Fire”) in east-central St Louis County near Brimson visible on radar imagery. Estimated size 150-200 acres per various reports.

That line fell apart over the lake but still another storm to the west that could drift north… what a pain in the neck. Not a bad call to delay but could’ve had a few innings in by this point.

Current radar and temps. Not too often do we see freezing rain in Duluth, let alone severe thunderstorms with freezing rain! #MNwx #WIwx

Just took advantage of the heat wave here in Duluth to get my deck cleared off! Had about 6-8” of fluff from the past few storms. Back to the deep freezer tomorrow! I feel pretty confident this will be the last shot of ten-below-and-colder temps for the season, though!!

Book Across the Bay - a ski/snowshoe event across Chequamagon Bay in Ashland, WI - has been cancelled due to… ongoing snowfall and strong winds. Sad to see given the amount of prep that goes into this unique winter event on the frozen bay of Lake Superior!
