Though Catholicism reached China during the Yuan era (1271-1368), the earliest surviving translations of Catholicism into Chinese are from late Ming (16th century) by Italian and Portuguese Jesuits. For transliteration of names, they likely used either the official Nanking官話 or Cantonese of the time
