More than 600 NOAA workers were laid off.
This week, the federal government reinstated some of them, but they were placed on administrative leave and have not been asked to return to work.

The agency had already halted several services because of staffing issues following the cuts, including some weather balloon launches. It is not clear whether those will resume.

Good article from @chron.com on some research that explained why the damage from the derecho was so bad downtown relative to what was seen with Beryl. Definitely a physical and meteorological difference in how the wind was channeled. Interesting paper linked in the article from FIU.

Space City Weather's Eric Berger, in an interview with Houston Matters, said it would be "pretty awful" if the local National Weather Service office were to close because of federal funding cuts.
