More than 600 NOAA workers were laid off.

This week, the federal government reinstated some of them, but they were placed on administrative leave and have not been asked to return to work.

Whether or not the services they previously contributed to will be restored remains unknown.

Good article from @chron.com on some research that explained why the damage from the derecho was so bad downtown relative to what was seen with Beryl. Definitely a physical and meteorological difference in how the wind was channeled. Interesting paper linked in the article from FIU.
