Tragically, he would be lost overboard during Halseys Typhoon in Dec 1944. He was last seen with a fire fighting party trying to put out a fire on a parked aircraft. Presumably he was swept overboard during the swells. His loss was felt deeply by the ships crew and pilots.

One of the notable sailors was pilot/CAG Lt. Cmdr Robert "Bob" Price. He was a beloved pilot who led air group 25. He was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross for action w/ VF-25. He was shot down and rescued after 11 days adrift. He returned to the states but was called back to the Moo as CAG.
