Text on white background: The doe ran. Raeni and Kurli wove through the panicked herd to chase it down. Lei gasped as it tripped but then righted itself and changed direction. She whined and stamped a paw, urging the chasers to reach it before it ran too far. Ahead of the doe, Strike and Blade emerged from their hiding spots, meeting it in a head on ambush. It shrieked and stumbled back to its original route, where the chasers were already closing in. The doe ran toward the copse as more pack-mates slunk out from the grasses, joining the chase. “Come on,” Lei muttered. “Come on.” Every pound of its hooves vibrated through her paw pads. She had never been close enough to a doe to see the whites of its eyes or the froth of spittle around its mouth as it drew frantic breath. She trembled. Whether with the urge to chase or turn tail, she didn’t know.

His ear flicked. That was two of them.
