Mood! And yes. I started doing a simmilar thing when I went with my xenofiction game. The idea was to move away from the standard human feel but it just... Feels correct. Just as Dungeon Meshi treats ALL AS "Man" (人間) So you have Tallfellows, Long Ears, Stouts, Halflings, Etc.

But the ones that most influenced what I do now, is the subgenre "girl dresses as boy adventure". Alanna was huge but actually Rowan Hood by @nancythespringer.bsky.social stuck deepest in my brain.

Yeah, I feel its weird to be a furry, therian, monster kid, whatever, and not have some form of connection to animals.

For monsters it also fits as ultimately nature is morbid and its fitting in with that. So much 'xenofiction' is baby wheels horror imo (I say that positively)

I love xenofiction. Non-human PoVs have always been a fascination of mine, but what I love even more is xenofiction that *actually involves humans as characters.* For understandable reasons, the role of humans in xenofiction is often as a malicious or uncaring higher power, if they exist at all.

#xenofiction I should start shouting into the void to see if I can get some cool books looked at! So first up: Hunters Unlucky.

It's a story about a little guy trying to outwit the evil big cats oppressing his people. It's recently been made into a series but this book is a standalone. (1/3)

I saw a movement in the darkness, like it was a curtain that suddenly twisted and shifted out of my range of vision. I sensed something at my feet, something I could not see yet which presence caused my supposedly dead body to tense up in anticipation. Then, as my mind struggled to comprehend what the other thing was, I could see it finally, and my heart woke inside my chest to beat anxiously. I saw a tall waggling limb, featureless except for the wound at the top of it. I could see down the hole to see the whiteness of severed bone jostling around in the writhing glistening vessels like red grass in a strong wind. At the base of this limb opened another hideous orifice, in which I could see the ribs past the brown flaps, and the dangling organs behind the ribs. The demon was not dead, and it wore its disfigurements like a lady would wear her vestiary. I wanted to scream. I tried to scream, but my beak was clamped shut in the rigor of death and no air would leave me. All I felt was my heart thudding within me as the dismembered devil loomed over me.

1. Animorphs was crucial in cementing my interest in non-human umwelten

2. Tragic Xenofiction like Plague Dogs and Black Beauty also made a big impression on my young mind
