I killed my lawn in 2020 with a ton of cardboard boxes, a few hundred dollars worth of fresh topsoil, and about $30 in seeds. I've spent probably an equal amount on bare-root plants and seeds. It's a fragrant oasis with milkweed, rattlesnake master, mountain mint, violets, and dogwoods, to start.

I also enjoyed @trapperhaskins.bsky.social "Crooked Old River," a tale of one guy's desire to build an old boat, and paddle it from the mouth of the Mississippi, all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico. The story rolls at the pace of the river itself, first slow and leisurely, then fast and messy.

I want to call attention specifically to "Diana of the Dunes: The True Story of Alice Gray" a woman whose probable genius was restricted by the the times her gender allowed for her. So she fucked off to go live in the still-wild Indiana Dunes. I love her and want to be her. Truly an icon.

Today, the study is in its 65th year, and has a deep well of data we can use to answer contemporary questions, including proof that environmental
l regulations enacted in the '70s, created a cleaner environment in remote places, far from any industry at all. We know this because of moose incisors.

It was a blast! My team of Moosewatchers spent a week filtering water out of streams and Lake Superior itself, keeping ourselves dry among wet vegetation and staying warm on cool spring days. The whole time, keeping our eyes on the ground looking for any evidence of a dead moose.

👋 Folks!

Last spring, I participated in the oldest predator-prey study in the world, by bushwhacking through cedar swamps and over ridges, hunting for moose bones. You can read about my adventures in the May/June edition of @discovermag.bsky.social Available at your local @barnesandnoble.com

I just finished "Winter Study" by Nevada Barr, which I picked up at the Isle Royale National Park Visitor's Center bookshop. It's a little 2008, but the story keeps moving. As someone who once had to self-rescue from a broken ankle in the middle of the wilderness, the author did her homework.

Today I will finish "Joan of Arc: A History" by Helen Castor, which I picked up from the Chicago Public Library.
