Step-dad, comp teacher, dog lover, and PhD. Learning to be a Tucson gardener. Good cook and hopefully more in the future. Most of all, incredibly happy spouse.
Yesterday we worked on espagnole sauce on steak. I made mine with asparagus. Not gonna lie. It was really good. Today, though, that turned into a steak, asparagus, potato hash cooked in clarified butter. Not gonna lie. It was even better. Nothing like a flavorful, crispy (yet fluffy) potatoes.

My first hollandaise in class yesterday was not good. I am now on a hollandaise redemption tour starting with brunch for my love @drtink.bsky.social

Is buying a nice bottle of wine that was bottled the year you got married because the vintner said it would wouldn't be ready to open until your 10th anniversary worth it? Yes, friends. Yes it is.

The most amazing day. Beautiful beaches, wonderful drinks, amazing food, and it rained. Oh, and I got (re)married to the love of my life @drtink.bsky.social. So, yeah, maybe the best day ever.

Where it started and where it's going.
I'm keeping my doctoral robes but adding my chef's coat.

Growing up my mom would make kuechen, which was basically a custard, breakfast pie with fruit. @drtink.bsky.social and I tried out an individual-sized version this morning. It turned out great.

What to do for date night when it's a bazillion degrees and the world is burning -- tomato-watermelon gazpacho with basil and (extra) jalapeno. The only heat comes from the date, not the cooking.

You know you're lucky when you get to have a renowned scholar come in and bring everything your students have been working on together in one, nice, tight package. So many students said, "Oh, I get it now." Thank you @drtink.bsky.social You are the ultimate closer.

We made deviled egg tacos for date night dinner. There are 11 habaneros in the sauces and filling. Spicy but so good. My face is still in tact and we will make these a lot more often.

It's such a gift to be with a partner that says, "we have pasta, shrimp, corn, mint, and feta" and makes this! Thank you @drtink.bsky.social

What's for dinner? Great question. @drtink.bsky.social made roasted grapes and chicken.

Small (but mighty) representative sample of what @drtink.bsky.social did with our POWWOW box: tomato sauce, salsa, pickles (spear, whole, grapes, peppers, and more), cucumber-drink mix, stir-fry mix, grape jam, shredded zucchini, tomato soup, smoked peppers, & frozen peppers. There's so much more.

Our still tiny but mighty plant is Salvia Plath. We have big plans for an herb garden I will post about in the future.

Not too bad for two transplants using only two watering cans.

We even have Elektra the rosemary bush. They were three sprigs in April.
May 23, 2025 at 5:18 PM
We are growing several varieties of tiny tomatoes we got from Native Seed SEARCH. They were tiny twigs a few months ago.
May 23, 2025 at 5:18 PM
We have two trees, a Meyer Lemon (named Michael of course) and a Blood Orange named Niki. Both lost their leaves when we planted them but are now getting them back.

Please meet Draco the Dragonfruit -- another plant we never dreamed of growing. When we planted them in March, they were smaller than the bamboo support in the middle.

This is Capercorn the caper bush. We didn't even know you could grow these. We got it at @spadefootnursery.bsky.social and it's doing great. For context, when we planted it a couple months ago we put rocks around it so the dogs would step on it. It was MUCH smaller than the rocks.

@drtink.bsky.social and I tried our hand at pork chop scampi. So good!!!!!!!
May 21, 2025 at 1:33 AM
We made tuna piccata tonight. [Insert Lion King joke here] It was quite good.

Our (@drtink.bsky.social) first Tucson Christmas season. College hockey on in the background. Egg nog in hand. Putting up the tree. Every patio door and window open since it's a beautiful night -- just shy of 70 degrees.

Spent a lovely evening with @drtink.bsky.social looking at hot-air balloons, eating mini donuts, and listening to a local band. Yay Tucson! (BTW, the "Oh Wow!" mini-donut food truck lives up to its name.)

Students are amazing. We spent the semester analyzing ghost stories and urban legends from their various communities for how they teach values. Today they shared the stories they wrote using those rhetorical structures. They were so creative and fun! They have these concepts down!
