Another week and the reconciliation bill would not have been an option w/o bringing back the House.

Voters basically gave Democrats permission to speedrun mucking up the gears of government. It doesn’t have to be any deeper than that until democrats have a governing coalition.

I agree that the outcome would likely be similar, but it wasn’t guaranteed. Forcing Republicans to do any sort of end run around ACA subsidies makes them do the unpopular thing harder. The point was to make it as painful as possible for Republicans. Capitulating undermines that.

The framing suggests this was a shut down like others in the past. ACA subsidies were the smallest possible gesture to leverage. With public opinion being on the side of democrats, there was no need to do anything. Keep driving a wedge until R’s defect for one reason or another. It was that simple.

if they get worked around, then Democrats get to say they did everything they could. They also don’t have to blow. The filibuster and republican constituents may still force Republicans to change their mind.

Plus when Trump is dropping in the polls, that’s usually when he makes strategic blenders

The path dependency is really important here, even if the outcomes look similar on paper.
1 Continue to watch Trump flail with sinking approval numbers.
2 Republicans blowing up the filibuster to avoid ACA subsidies is doubly painful for them. This hurts people in the south the most.

the story of this shutdown is that Trump and the Republicans have played the politics significantly worse than Chuck Schumer and folks that's a genuine accomplishment
